Position Summary
The Breast Sonographer performs high-quality breast ultrasound examinations to assist in the detection, diagnosis, and evaluation of breast abnormalities. Working closely with radiologists, and multidisciplinary healthcare teams, the Breast Sonographer provides compassionate patient care while ensuring accurate imaging, adherence to safety standards, and compliance with departmental protocols and regulatory requirements.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform diagnostic and screening breast ultrasound examinations according to established protocols and physician orders.
- Obtain and review relevant patient history and clinical information to ensure appropriate imaging studies are performed.
- Produce high-quality ultrasound images that accurately demonstrate breast anatomy and pathology.
- Prepare patients for examinations by explaining procedures, addressing concerns, and ensuring patient comfort and privacy.
- Recognize and appropriately document abnormal findings for radiologist interpretation.
- Maintain accurate patient records and imaging documentation within electronic medical record (EMR) and PACS systems.
- Ensure proper operation, maintenance, and quality control of ultrasound equipment.
- Adhere to infection prevention, patient safety, and radiation safety standards as applicable.
- Participate in quality assurance and quality improvement initiatives.
- Collaborate with physicians, nurses, technologists, and administrative staff to provide exceptional patient care.
- Support accreditation and regulatory compliance activities, including ACR and state requirements.
- Maintain patient confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA regulations.
- Participate in continuing education activities to maintain professional competency and certification requirements.
Required Qualifications
- Graduate of an accredited Diagnostic Medical Sonography program or equivalent accredited training program.
- Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (RDMS) through the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS).
- Or Registered Technologist in Radiography (R), Mammography (M), and Breast Sonography (BS) via the American Registry of Radiologic Technologist.
- Breast Sonography (BR) specialty certification preferred.
- Must demonstrate punctuality and reliable attendance.
Preferred Qualifications
- Minimum of one to two years of breast imaging or breast sonography experience preferred.
- Proficient in electronic medical record systems (Epic).
- Experienced with mammography imaging equipment such as Hologic and/or breast sonography equipment such as GE.
Skills & Competencies
- Comprehensive knowledge of breast anatomy, pathology, and ultrasound imaging techniques.
- Strong understanding of breast imaging protocols and quality standards.
- Ability to identify and appropriately communicate urgent or significant findings.
- Excellent interpersonal and patient communication skills.
- Ability to provide compassionate care to patients undergoing breast evaluations.
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.
- Proficiency with PACS, EMR systems, and ultrasound equipment.
Physical Requirements
- Prolonged standing and walking throughout the shift.
- Ability to lift and assist patients (up to 25–50 lbs) and support patient positioning.
- Ability to perform repetitive movements, including reaching, bending, and adjusting equipment.
- Visual acuity to assess image quality.
- Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced clinical environment while maintaining attention to detail.
