We are seeking a skilled and versatile Service Technician – Automated Machines with experience in both mechanical and electrical disciplines to join our team. This position is employed by Steven Douglas Corp (SDC) and is based in the Perrysburg, Ohio area, where it will primarily support First Solar's specialized test equipment used in the solar panel manufacturing process. The role requires regular local travel between First Solar facilities and occasional travel (approximately 10% to 15%) to SDC headquarters in Concord, Ohio for training, team meetings, project support, and collaboration with engineering and leadership teams.
The ideal candidate will be responsible for troubleshooting, maintaining, and optimizing automated machines and systems, with a focus on HVAC systems, heaters, and electronic measurement equipment. While expertise in PLC/HMI programming is not required, familiarity with automation hardware configuration and integration is essential.

What You’ll Do:
- Travel locally between First Solar facilities in the Perrysburg, OH area to troubleshoot, repair, and maintain specialized test equipment used in the Solar Panel Manufacturing process.
- Manage customer interactions and communications during service visits.
- Perform mechanical and electrical diagnostics, using schematics and technical documentation to identify and resolve system malfunctions.
- Configure, troubleshoot, and calibrate HVAC systems, heaters, electronic measurement equipment, and motion control components such as drives and actuators.
- Experience with robotic systems is a plus; however, candidates with strong HVAC backgrounds are encouraged to apply even without robotics experience.
- Conduct preventative maintenance audits and service on SDC machines, as needed.
- Provide timely technical support to customers via phone, email, and on-site visits to address system issues and operational challenges.
- Guide customers through troubleshooting to minimize downtime and ensure equipment efficiency.
- Collaborate with SDC engineering teams to leverage expertise in resolving complex operational issues.
- Share customer feedback with engineering team to improve designs.
- Represent SDC professionally and helpfully, promoting the company as a premier solution provider for custom machines, spare parts, future service, etc.
- Support project management, and other teams to ensure timely, complete, and accurate service deliveries.
- Document service calls, solutions, and best practices for invoicing and internal reference purposes.
What We’re Looking For:
- 5+ years of hands-on experience troubleshooting, repairing, and maintaining automated machinery, industrial equipment, or manufacturing systems in a field service, maintenance, or technical support environment.
- Strong mechanical and electrical troubleshooting skills with the ability to diagnose root causes and implement effective solutions independently.
- Experience servicing HVAC systems, heaters, environmental chambers, temperature control systems, and electronic measurement equipment.
- EPA Section 608 Universal Certification preferred; candidates with HVAC service experience and the ability to obtain certification may also be considered.
- Experience supporting automated equipment that incorporates robotics, vision systems, motion control, or other advanced automation technologies is a plus.
- Familiarity with industrial automation components including servo drives, sensors, actuators, motors, valves, and related control devices.
- Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings, electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and technical manuals to support troubleshooting and repair activities.
- Customer-focused mindset with excellent communication skills and the ability to explain technical issues and solutions clearly to operators, maintenance personnel, and management.
- Comfortable working independently at customer sites while representing SDC in a professional manner.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities, respond to equipment downtime situations, and maintain a sense of urgency when supporting production-critical equipment.
- Valid driver's license with a satisfactory driving record.
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively with customers, technicians, engineers, and project teams.
- Physical ability to lift up to 50 pounds and perform work in manufacturing and industrial environments, including standing, climbing, bending, and working around machinery.
Travel Requirements: Ability to travel regularly between First Solar facilities and occasionally travel overnight (approximately 10% to 15%) for training, meetings, project support, equipment installations, service activities, and other business-related needs
