Description

The Fleet Safety Compliance Specialist serves as the primary Safety point of contact for an assigned group of independent owner-operator drivers. This position monitors driver safety and compliance performance, provides coaching and support, coordinates required corrective actions and training, and promotes consistent adherence to company policies and regulatory requirements.


The Fleet Safety Compliance Specialist builds strong working relationships with drivers while maintaining accountability for safe driving practices, hours-of-service (HOS) compliance, required documentation, and overall safety performance. This position also partners with internal departments and operational leaders to identify risks, address concerns, and support continuous improvement.


Essential Job Duties 

  • Serve as the primary Safety contact for an assigned group of independent owner-operator drivers
  • Build positive, trust-based relationships with drivers while promoting accountability, engagement, and safe driving behaviors
  • Independently evaluate driver safety and compliance performance, assess the nature and severity of identified risks, compare available courses of action, and determine or recommend the appropriate response in accordance with DOT, FMCSA, and company requirements
  • Determine the appropriate coaching strategy based on the driver’s performance history, circumstances, severity of the concern, and applicable requirements; independently conduct coaching and establish expectations for improvement
  • Evaluate safety and compliance concerns and independently select or recommend appropriate remedial training, corrective action, monitoring requirements, and follow-up based on the circumstances and level of risk
  • Interpret and apply Evans’ driver eligibility standards to individual circumstances, make routine eligibility determinations within delegated authority, and develop recommendations for complex, exceptional, or high-risk cases requiring leadership review
  • Maintain accurate and timely records related to driver compliance, training, coaching, inspections, and corrective actions within Motive, Driver 360, Luma, GoToAssist, and other applicable company systems
  • Independently investigate and resolve assigned safety matters by gathering relevant information, evaluating applicable requirements, weighing reasonable alternatives, and determining the appropriate course of action; escalate only matters requiring higher-level authority or presenting exceptional risk
  • Analyze individual and fleet-level safety and compliance data, exercise judgment in identifying material risk trends, and develop recommendations for corrective action, training, process improvements, or other risk-reduction strategies
  • Serve as a Safety and compliance resource to internal stakeholders, provide guidance on the application of regulatory and company requirements, and implement appropriate resolutions to driver-related safety and compliance matters
  • Participate in departmental meetings, safety reviews, process-improvement initiatives, and special projects as assigned
  • Regularly exercise independent judgment in evaluating safety and compliance matters, comparing reasonable courses of action, and determining or recommending appropriate resolutions within established areas of authority
  • Perform other duties as assigned
Requirements


Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Experience communicating performance concerns and corrective expectations to drivers and customer partners
  • Experience providing driver coaching, safety counseling, or compliance-related guidance
  • Experience supporting drivers or operations across multiple locations
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Outlook, Word, Excel, and Teams
  • Ability to learn and effectively navigate multiple technology platforms and reporting systems 
  • Strong organizational, time-management, and follow-up skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities 
  • Strong attention to detail and the ability to maintain accurate and timely records
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to provide clear, constructive, and accountability-focused coaching
  • Travel is required based on operational and customer needs


Preferred Qualifications

  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Safety, Transportation, Logistics, Supply Chain Management, Business, or a related field
  • 2+ years of experience in transportation safety, fleet safety, or trucking compliance
  • Working knowledge of Department of Transportation (DOT) and Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) regulations, including commercial-driver hours-of-service (HOS) requirements
  • Experience using Motive or a similar electronic logging device, fleet-safety, or driver-performance platform
  • Bilingual, English/Spanish
