The Prescribed Pediatric Extended Care (PPEC) Registered Nurse provides skilled nursing care and health oversight for medically fragile and chronically ill children in a licensed daycare-style PPEC setting. This role supports the daily health, safety, and developmental needs of pediatric participants by delivering nursing care in accordance with physician orders, individualized plans of care, and applicable state and federal regulations. The PPEC Registered Nurse monitors health status, administers medications and treatments, manages medical equipment, and responds to changes in condition while fostering a safe, nurturing, and developmentally appropriate environment. Working collaboratively with childcare staff, families, and interdisciplinary providers, the PPEC RN helps ensure continuity of care, regulatory compliance, and an inclusive setting that allows children to participate in daily activities to the greatest extent possible.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Provide skilled nursing care to medically fragile and chronically ill children in a licensed daycare-style PPEC setting.
- Perform ongoing clinical assessments and monitor participants’ health status throughout the day.
- Administer medications, treatments, and therapies in accordance with physician orders and individualized plans of care.
- Manage and monitor medical equipment such as feeding tubes, suctioning devices, oxygen, ventilators, and monitors as required.
- Respond promptly to changes in condition, medical emergencies, and acute health needs.
- Develop, implement, and update individualized care plans in collaboration with physicians, families, and interdisciplinary team members.
- Maintain accurate and timely clinical documentation in compliance with PPEC, Medicaid, and state licensing requirements.
- Coordinate care with childcare staff to support safe participation in age-appropriate and developmentally appropriate activities.
- Provide health oversight and guidance to non-licensed childcare staff regarding medical needs, precautions, and infection control.
- Educate and communicate with families and caregivers regarding the child’s health status, care needs, and daily progress.
- Ensure compliance with infection control, safety protocols, and emergency preparedness procedures.
- Participate in admissions, discharges, and care transitions as applicable.
- Assist with staff training related to pediatric health needs, emergency response, and care procedures.
- Support a nurturing, inclusive environment that promotes each child’s well-being, comfort, and developmental growth.
- Adhere to all applicable state and federal regulations governing PPEC programs.
Current, active Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of practice.
- Graduate of an accredited nursing program.
- Minimum of 1–2 years of pediatric nursing experience preferred; experience with medically fragile or special needs children strongly preferred.
- Experience in pediatric home health, long-term care, PPEC, school nursing, or similar settings preferred.
- Current CPR/BLS certification required; Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) preferred or required per state regulations.
- Knowledge of pediatric growth and development and family-centered care principles.
- Experience with pediatric medical equipment such as feeding tubes, suctioning devices, oxygen therapy, ventilators, and monitors.
- Familiarity with individualized plans of care and physician orders.
- Knowledge of infection control practices, medication administration, and emergency response in pediatric settings.
- Ability to meet state PPEC licensing, Medicaid, and background screening requirements.
- Strong communication, documentation, and teamwork skills.
- Ability to work effectively in a structured daycare environment while supporting children’s developmental and social activities.
- Physical ability to perform nursing duties, including lifting, transferring, and responding to emergencies, with or without reasonable accommodation.
