Structural Engineer / Project Manager - Transportation
Lancaster, PA Planning & Design/Transportation
Job Type
Full-time
Description

The Opportunity

RETTEW is seeking an experienced Structural Engineer / Project Manager – Transportation to lead the design and delivery of bridge and transportation-structure projects.

This role is designed for a structural engineer who wants to remain technically engaged while taking ownership of project delivery, including scope, schedule, budget, quality, multidisciplinary coordination, and client and agency relationships.

We are specifically looking for a transportation structures professional with a strong design background. This is not a building-structures position or a primarily bridge-inspection role. Successful candidates will bring hands-on structural design experience along with the ability to lead projects and help guide developing engineers.

Work Environment

Workplace Designation: Hybrid

Locations: Berwyn, Lancaster, Lehigh Valley, Mechanicsburg, State College, or Pittsburgh, PA; Akron/Canton, OH; or Morgantown, WV

This position combines in-office collaboration with remote-work flexibility, focused technical work, multidisciplinary project coordination, and occasional field, client, and agency activities.

What You'll Do

As a Structural Engineer / Project Manager, you will lead and perform structural engineering work for transportation infrastructure projects while managing project scope, schedule, budget, quality, and coordination.

You will contribute directly to the analysis and design of bridges, culverts, retaining walls, and related transportation structures while coordinating with roadway, drainage, traffic, survey, environmental, and other technical disciplines.

You will also serve as a technical resource to project teams, communicate with transportation agencies and clients, mentor developing professionals, and help RETTEW successfully deliver transportation projects throughout Pennsylvania and the surrounding region.

As a Project Manager, you will:

  • Lead and perform structural analysis and design for bridges, culverts, retaining walls, and related transportation structures.
  • Develop and review structural calculations, plans, details, specifications, technical reports, and other engineering deliverables.
  • Apply applicable AASHTO, PennDOT, Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission, and other transportation structural-design standards and requirements
  • Lead structural portions of transportation projects from scope development through final delivery.
  • Manage project scope, schedules, budgets, staffing needs, technical deliverables, and project risks.
  • Provide technical oversight and perform QA/QC reviews of structural engineering work.
  • Coordinate structural design with roadway, drainage, traffic, survey, environmental, and other project disciplines.
  • Coordinate with PennDOT, the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission, municipalities, clients, and other transportation stakeholders
  • Respond to agency and client review comments and support projects through applicable review and approval processes.
  • Identify technical, constructability, schedule, and project-delivery challenges and develop practical solutions.
  • Participate in field investigations, structural assessments, and construction-phase engineering activities as project needs require.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to engineers and designers.
  • Support proposals, scopes of work, technical approaches, fee development, and project planning.
  • Build and maintain strong working relationships with clients and transportation-agency partners.

What We're Looking For

Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
  • Active Professional Engineer (PE) license, with the ability to obtain Pennsylvania licensure if not currently licensed in Pennsylvania.
  • Strong professional experience in transportation structural design
  • Demonstrated experience designing bridges, culverts, retaining walls, or related transportation structures.
  • Professional project experience supporting PennDOT and/or the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission
  • Experience performing structural analysis and preparing structural calculations and design documentation.
  • Working knowledge of AASHTO and applicable transportation structural-design standards
  • Professional experience using structural analysis and engineering-design software.
  • Demonstrated project-management experience involving scope, schedule, budget, multidisciplinary coordination, and project delivery.
  • Experience preparing and reviewing structural plans, specifications, calculations, reports, and other technical deliverables.
  • Experience coordinating with multidisciplinary transportation project teams.
  • Experience interacting with transportation agencies, clients, and other project stakeholders.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Candidates do not need experience in every area below. We value both deep structural-design expertise and broader transportation project-delivery experience.

  • MicroStation experience.
  • OpenBridge Designer or other Bentley 3D/MicroStation-based structural-design experience.
  • Demonstrated successful project delivery across multiple PennDOT districts
  • Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission project-delivery experience.
  • PennDOT LRFD structural-design programs.
  • MIDAS, SAP2000, or comparable structural-analysis software.
  • Bridge replacement and rehabilitation design.
  • Culvert design.
  • Retaining-wall design.
  • Structural load ratings.
  • Technical QA/QC responsibility.
  • Construction-phase engineering experience.
  • Experience leading multidisciplinary transportation project teams.
