Position Summary
The Director of Accounting Operations is a senior finance leader responsible for overseeing accounting operations, financial reporting, internal controls, compliance, and the integrity of the company’s financial records. This role partners closely with the Chief Financial Officer and business leaders to deliver accurate, timely financial information that supports operational performance, strategic planning, and sound decision-making.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Reporting & Close Management
- Lead monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes.
- Oversee preparation of financial statements, management reporting, reconciliations, and financial analysis.
- Ensure timely, accurate, and GAAP-compliant financial reporting.
- Provide financial insights and recommendations to executive leadership.
Accounting Operations & Cash Management
- Manage day-to-day accounting functions, including General Ledger, AP, AR, payroll accounting, fixed assets, and intercompany transactions.
- Oversee treasury and cash management activities, banking relationships, liquidity planning, and working capital monitoring.
- Prepare and maintain rolling cash flow forecasts.
- Support budgeting, forecasting, and variance analysis efforts.
Governance, Compliance & Risk Management
- Develop and maintain internal controls, accounting policies, and financial procedures.
- Ensure compliance with GAAP, regulatory requirements, and company policies.
- Coordinate external audits, tax reporting support, and auditor/advisor relationships.
- Safeguard company assets and ensure the integrity of financial records.
Process Improvement, Systems & Integration
- Evaluate and optimize accounting systems, ERPs, processes, and reporting tools.
- Drive automation, scalability, and operational efficiency initiatives.
- Lead accounting-related integration activities for acquisitions, including systems, controls, reporting, and policy alignment.
- Standardize processes across entities and locations.
Leadership & Business Partnership
- Lead, develop, and mentor accounting team members.
- Foster accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
- Partner with the CFO and cross-functional leaders on strategic planning and operational decision-making.
- Provide technical accounting guidance and finance leadership across the organization.
Reporting Structure:
- The Director of Accounting Operations typically reports to the Chief Financial Officer and may oversee accounting, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll accounting, and financial reporting team members.
Compensation:
- Base salary of $120,000-$150,000 + potential bonus earnings of up to 20% of base
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, or a related field.
- 8+ years of progressive accounting or finance experience, including leadership responsibility.
- Prior experience as a Controller, Assistant Controller, Accounting Manager, or similar senior accounting role.
- Strong knowledge of U.S. GAAP, financial reporting, internal controls, and close processes.
- Experience managing audits and working with external auditors.
- Demonstrated ability to lead accounting teams, improve processes, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- Proficiency with ERP, accounting, reporting, and spreadsheet tools.
Preferred Qualifications
- Certified Public Accountant designation.
- Public accounting or audit experience.
- MBA, master’s degree, or advanced coursework in accounting, finance, or business.
- Experience with multi-entity, multi-location, private equity-backed, or high-growth organizations.
- Experience implementing or optimizing ERP systems and accounting workflows.
