Description

Pay rate: To maintain internal equity, we have identified the pay rate for this position at the Oakland Zoo as $24.28 per hour, in alignment with Oakland Zoo’s compensation philosophy. An offer at this pay rate will be our best and final compensation offer.

Position Summary

The Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) is an essential member of Oakland Zoo’s team, responding to radio calls and providing basic first aid/life support as needed. They support everyone in having the most positive and enjoyable experience possible by providing superior customer service to Zoo guests, staff, vendors and members of the public.

 

Essential Job Duties

 

General Safety, Security and Operations Support 

  • Responds to radio calls and provides assessment of on-view situations associated with injury or illness.  
  • Provides basic first aid/life support as needed while determining whether advanced life support is necessary   
  • Maintains supplies in Facility First Aid and Disaster Kits and monitors Fire Extinguisher readiness, certification, and placement.  
  • Assists in developing Emergency Preparedness Plans.  
  • Performs weekly tours of the Zoo/Park to document safety hazards.  
  • Initiates and writes Accident/Incident/Hazard Reports and various other documentation required to protect Zoo assets and liability.  
  • Conducts vehicle and foot patrols relative to opening and locking gates, Robbery Prevention, Public Safety, and Building Security.   
  • Responds to security calls, up to and including the removal of individuals from Zoo property.  
  • Supports parking operations as needed.  
  • Sets and responds to alarms and address violations in picnic and/or party areas.   
  • Assists with Internal Investigations.   
  • Performs Revenue Escorts.   
  • Monitors and reports Zoo and Employee vehicle excessive speed violations and improper or careless use of Zoo Equipment.  

Administrative Support  

  • Answers office phone calls regarding public safety and Lost and Found items    
  • Assists with Lost and Found organization and documentation    
  • Performs other related duties as required and assigned.

Who you are: 

  • Minimum 1 year of relevant experience, including experience working with the public
  • At least 18 years old
  • Possesses a State of California EMT Certification
  • High School Graduate or G.E.D
  • Possess a valid Driver’s License and maintain a good DMV Driving Record (that satisfies the Zoo’s Insurance Carrier)
  • Able to problem solve and effectively read, write, and take directions in English.
  • Reliable, dependable, honest, courteous, and professional while ensuring confidentiality when necessary
  • Available to work weekends and holidays unless otherwise authorized.

 

Bonus if you have:

  • A current State of California Security Guard Card or be willing to get one with the assistance of the Oakland Zoo. 

 

Work Environment – Environmental or atmospheric conditions commonly associated with the performance of the functions of this job.

  • Work in indoor and outdoor environments in various weather conditions, including inclement outdoor weather conditions such as heat, cold, wind and rain.

  • Able to bend and twist, lift 25 lbs., stand, kneel, sit, walk, bend, stoop and speak regularly and for long periods of time (up to 8 hour shifts or more)
