POSITION SUMMARY
Subrogation Investigator will play a key role in managing claims involving damage or loss caused by third parties. Their primary responsibility is to investigate incidents, determine liability and pursue recovery costs on behalf of J&R Schugel Trucking, Inc.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
· Gather facts related to accidents or unknown damages.
· Assess the extent of damage to vehicles or property.
· Determine whether third parties (other drivers, shippers, etc.) are responsible for the damage or loss.
· Evaluate insurance coverage and applicable laws to establish who is at fault.
· Prepare and submit claims to the responsible party or their insurance carrier.
· Negotiate settlements to recover costs related to repairs or downtime.
· Monitor the status of claims to ensure timely resolution and payment.
· Work closely with legal team, insurance adjusters and other departments (i.e. safety, operations, maintenance) to gather necessary information.
· Maintain detailed records of investigations, claims and recoveries.
· Provide regular updates to management regarding the status of subrogation cases and recovery efforts.
· Identify trends in incidents and recommend policies or procedures to reduce future risks and losses.
· Download roadside inspections, determine the most frequent or significant violations and communicate findings to departments as well as drivers.
· Monitor, log, and manage driver citations, including verifying details, investigating root causes, and processing payments or disputes.
· Ensure drivers understand their responsibilities regarding citations and facilitate clear communication on chargebacks.
· Freight and accident claim back-up.
· Audit driver qualification files, investigate what is missing or out of compliance and collaborate with Risk Prevention Managers to complete the files.
· Performs all other duties assigned or directed by supervisor.

Education
- High school diploma or equivalent (minimum requirement). Associate or bachelor’s degree in relevant field of study such as Business Administration, Transportation or Logistics, or Insurance and Risk Management (preferred but not required).
Experience
- 1 – 2 years of experience handling insurance claims.
- Familiarity with the logistics and challenges of trucking operations is beneficial.
SKILLS & ABILITIES
Computer Skills
- Intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
- AS/400 and Tenstreet experience desired but not required.
Other Requirements
- Ability to type a minimum of 35 wpm.
- Able to read, write, and speak the English language fluently.
- Ability to evaluate evidence, determine fault and strategize recovery efforts.
- Confidence in negotiating settlements with insurance companies or third parties.
- Familiarity with FMCSA regulations and insurance requirements.
- Attention to detail.
- Clear and effective communication.
