Progressive Machine & Design (PMD) is looking for an experienced Controls Build Electrician II to join our team. In this role, you will be responsible for electrical panel building, machine wiring, plumbing, troubleshooting, debugging, shipping preparation, and field installation of custom automation equipment.
This position is ideal for an experienced automation electrician who enjoys hands-on work, solving electrical and wiring challenges, and seeing a project through from build to installation.
You will work closely with engineers, machine builders, production personnel, and project leaders to build and troubleshoot complex automated equipment.
What You'll Do:
Electrical Panel Build & Machine Wiring
- Drill and tap holes, mount wireways and DIN rails, and wire electrical components.
- Create enclosure cutouts and knockouts.
- Build and wire electrical panels and machine components.
- Determine optimal device placement for components such as I/O blocks, valve banks, RFID readers, and junction boxes.
- Plan and execute efficient cable routing from external devices to main enclosures.
- Identify and implement effective wiring and plumbing paths for sub-assemblies.
- Engrave identification tags and label panels, enclosures, and components.
Project Coordination
- Manage the job parts shelf and ensure required components are received and available.
- Keep drawing packets current with the latest revisions.
- Communicate important project changes to job leaders, engineers, and other team members.
- Prioritize work to efficiently wire and plumb machines and meet project schedules.
Debugging & Troubleshooting
- Work with engineers, machine builders, and production personnel to troubleshoot and resolve wiring and assembly issues.
- Follow proper machine power-up procedures.
- Support electrical debugging alongside engineering and mechanical build teams.
- Troubleshoot electrical issues and help ensure machines operate properly before shipment and installation.
Shipping & Installation
- Disassemble and package components and equipment for shipment.
- Support machine installation and startup activities at customer locations.
- Travel domestically and internationally for project installations, with travel of up to 30%.
Safety & Housekeeping
- Follow all applicable safety procedures and PPE requirements.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and orderly work area.
- Perform other duties assigned by management that are within the scope of the position and applicable regulations.
Required Qualifications:
- High school diploma or GED.
- 2+ years of experience as an electrician in the automation industry.
- Strong knowledge of electrical components, wiring methods, and electrical panel assembly techniques.
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, electrical schematics, and wiring diagrams.
- Working knowledge of electrical codes, standards, and regulations, including NEC and UL.
- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to use the basic functions of a multimeter.
- Understanding of basic electrical fundamentals and mathematics.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to manage multiple priorities.
- Ability to work independently and effectively as part of a team.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills.
Physical & Work Environment:
This is a hands-on manufacturing position. The role regularly requires standing, walking, bending, stooping, kneeling, pushing, pulling, reaching, and using hands to handle tools and components.
- Ability to regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds unassisted.
- Work primarily takes place indoors around moving mechanical parts with moderate noise levels.
- Regular exposure to electrical equipment and potential risk of electrical shock.
- Occasional outdoor work in varying weather conditions.
- Must wear required safety equipment and PPE.
- Ability to perform work requiring close, distance, peripheral, and depth vision, including color recognition.
- Travel up to 30%, including domestic and international project installations.
