Description

Purpose:  Under the direction of the Custodial and Events Supervisor, the Custodial Service Worker I is responsible for maintaining the clean and orderly condition of the school and to support other facilities department functions such as event setups and takedowns and furniture moving as necessary to ensure the highest quality of custodial and event operations.   


Essential Functions:

The Custodial Service Worker I is to maintain the clean and orderly condition of the school.


Spend approximately 75% of the time cleaning buildings and grounds. 

Daily activities include:

  • Empty trash in classrooms, restrooms, offices, commons, and deliver to compactor.
  • Dust exposed desktops, partition ledges, and other horizontal hard surfaces.
  • Vacuum carpeted floors.
  • Sweep/wet mop hard-surfaced floors.
  • Spray and wipe clean entry door glass.
  • Vacuum entryway mats and re-center position.
  • Polish elevators, drinking fountains, and other stainless steel surfaces.
  • Spot clean floors.
  • Spot clean smudges on hard surfaces.
  • Refill toilet tissue, soap, and paper-towel dispensers as needed.
  • Spot clean bathroom walls and partitions with disinfectant.
  • Clean and sanitize fixtures, sinks, countertops, and dispensers with disinfectant.
  • Clean and sanitize urinals, toilet seats, and toilet bowls with disinfectant.
  • Clean and dry polish mirrors, glass, frames, and enameled surfaces.

Weekly activities include:

  • Dust low vents, blinds, sills, moldings, and picture frames.
  • Dust high and low vents and moldings in restrooms.
  • Spot clean all non-entryway glass doors and windows as needed.
  • Wipe down and sanitize fitness equipment.

Monthly activities include:

  • Dust high vents, blinds, sills, moldings, and pictures.
  • Damp wipe and spot clean doors, door frames, kick plates and moldings.
  • Scrub non-waxed floors during months of school operation.

Spring Break, Christmas and summer: 

  • Fully machine wash and sanitize with disinfectant hard surface bathroom walls and partitions.
  • Machine clean or extract clean carpeted areas (or complete as requested).
  • Deep scrub sealed hard-surfaced floors (or complete as requested).
  • Wax hard surface waxed floors (spring break and summer) or as needed.
  • Fully clean low windows.


Spend approximately 25% of the time assisting with setups of events as necessary 

  • Move and set up of valuable furniture, tables, chairs, decorations, props, projection screens, gym floor mats, etc. 
  • Assist as necessary with outside vendors for the moving or removing of tables, chairs, and other rentals for events and special setups.

Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.


Abuse Risk Management Standards:

  • Adheres to policies related to boundaries with students. 
  • Attends required abuse risk management training.
  • Reports suspicious and inappropriate behaviors. 
  • Follows mandated abuse reporting requirements.
  • Custodians – ensures unused rooms and closets remain locked; routinely monitors high-risk locations (locker rooms and bathrooms), etc. 

Working Environment:

  • Ability to exert heavy physical effort including climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching and crawling, and lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials weighing 20 to 50 pounds; may occasionally involve heavier objects and materials weighing up to 100 pounds.  
  • Tasks are regularly performed with potential exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as strong odors, fumes, dusts, wetness, humidity, machinery, vibrations, temperature and noise extremes, disease, pathogenic substances and toxic/poisonous agents. 
  • Generally 85% walking and 15% standing. 
  • Work in both a traditional climate-controlled environment and outside exposure to weather conditions, including extreme heat and cold.

Requirements
  • High school diploma or GED is preferred, and previous related experience.
  • Ability to operate standard custodial equipment.
  • Ability to apply common sense, understanding, and to carry out instructions furnished in written or oral form.  Ability to ascertain which tasks need immediate assistance and to act accordingly.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with all constituents in a school environment.
  • Ability to log onto a computer and check school email, school calendar, and school announcements.
  • Knowledge regarding housekeeping-related products and appropriate use and application of products on various surfaces and materials.
  • Self-motivated, high-energy, and hard-working, task-oriented, and organized.
