Role Overview:
The Quality Engineer will be a member of the Quality Team, reporting to the Quality Director in Manufacturing.
Key Responsibilities:
Production Quality Support
- Provide Quality guidance to Production on product requirements, specifications, drawings, and acceptance criteria.
- Support Production in resolving significant, complex, or recurring quality issues.
- Participate in investigations of quality escapes, customer issues, and significant internal defects.
- Develop or support development of inspection plans, Quality Plans, and Inspection & Test Plans (ITPs).
- Define appropriate inspection methods and risk-based sampling requirements.
- Support First Article Inspection (FAI), final inspection, FAT, and customer-witnessed quality activities.
- Work with Production and Engineering to establish effective defect prevention and containment measures.
- Provide Quality input to process changes, engineering changes, and new product introductions.
Nonconformance & Corrective Action
- Manage the technical investigation of internal and supplier nonconformances.
- Lead root-cause analysis for significant or recurring quality issues.
- Use structured problem-solving tools such as 5-Why, Fishbone, Pareto, and 8D.
- Coordinate containment and corrective-action activities with Production, Engineering, Supply Chain, and suppliers.
- Develop and document technical corrective actions.
- Evaluate proposed corrective actions for effectiveness from a Quality perspective.
- Verify implementation and effectiveness of corrective actions.
- Support MRB activities and provide technical Quality recommendations for disposition.
- Identify repeat issues and escalate systemic problems to the Quality Manager.
- Support Quality Alerts and other technical quality communications as required.
Supplier Quality
- Serve as the Quality team's primary technical contact for assigned suppliers.
- Review supplier quality documentation, inspection reports, certificates, and test results as required.
- Establish risk-based incoming inspection and sampling requirements for purchased components.
- Lead supplier nonconformance investigations and Supplier Corrective Action Requests (SCARs).
- Support supplier qualification and initial quality assessments.
- Participate in supplier audits, source inspections, pre-shipment inspections, and supplier FAT activities as required.
- Work with Supply Chain and suppliers to contain and resolve quality issues that may impact production.
- Identify opportunities to improve supplier quality and reduce incoming defects.
Quality Planning & Inspection
- Identify critical-to-quality characteristics and appropriate verification methods.
- Establish inspection and sampling requirements based on product and process risk.
- Review engineering drawings, specifications, customer requirements, and applicable standards to establish inspection criteria.
- Support development of inspection checklists and acceptance criteria.
FAT & Customer Quality Support
- Support Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) from a Quality perspective.
- Participate in FAT preparation, inspection, testing, and customer witnessing activities.
- Verify required inspection and test records are complete and traceable.
- Support investigation and resolution of FAT failures or customer findings.
- Provide technical Quality support during customer inspections and quality-related discussions.
Basic (Required) Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering (Mechanical or Electrical)
- 2+ years of experience in manufacturing quality, supplier quality, or a related technical environment.
- Experience with manufacturing quality and supplier quality activities.
- Experience with nonconformance investigation and corrective action.
- Ability to interpret engineering drawings, specifications, and technical requirements.
- Working knowledge of 5-Why, Fishbone, Pareto, 8D, FMEA, and other quality tools.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Strong communication and cross-functional collaboration skills.
Preferred Qualifications: (Desirable attributes that go beyond minimum, for better success/alignment with the role)
- Experience with generator assembly, power generation, or industrial equipment.
- Supplier Quality Engineering experience.
- Experience with Factory Acceptance Testing.
- ASQ Certified Quality Engineer (CQE) or equivalent.
- Lean Six Sigma experience.
- Experience with ERP/QMS systems.
