Head Coach - Flag Football
Job Type
Full-time
Description

The Head Coach – Flag Football is the most visible coaching role in our new professional Flag Football league, which launches in Summer 2027. This person will be the competitive and cultural leader of one of the inaugural women’s franchises, a position that carries the weight of building something historic and the responsibility of leading elite athletes at the highest level of the sport.

The Head Coach – Flag Football will own the franchise’s complete on-field identity, including: competitive strategy, scheme philosophy, player development culture, game-day execution, and the professional experience of every athlete on the roster. The Head Coach – Flag Football works in partnership with the Offensive Coordinator, Defensive Coordinator, and the league’s Director of Coaching to build a team that competes at the highest level while representing the league’s values on and off the field.

All Head Coaches are centrally employed by the league and report through the Director, Coaching – Flag Football to the SVP, Operations – Flag Football.

Responsibilities:

Competitive Leadership & Game Strategy

  • Own the franchise’s complete competitive identity — scheme philosophy, tempo, game-day approach, and the strategic decisions that define how the team plays
  • Direct all aspects of game preparation, including weekly game-planning, opponent film study, scheme installation, and the practice structure that builds competitive readiness
  • Make all final in-game decisions — including key situational calls, clock management, roster deployment, and any decisions that require the head coach’s authority during live competition
  • Collaborate with the Offensive Coordinator and Defensive Coordinator on weekly scheme installation, practice design, and in-game adjustments — holding both coordinators accountable to the standard of competitive excellence the franchise demands
  •  Stay current on flag football at the IFAF level, national team competition, and the evolving 5v5 landscape, incorporating relevant innovations into the team’s approach

Team Culture & Player Leadership

  • Establish and sustain the franchise’s culture — the values, standards, accountability expectations, and competitive identity that players, staff, and the league can build on year over year
  • Build genuine, trusted relationships with every player on the roster, understanding their individual goals, challenges, and development needs alongside their competitive role on the team
  • Lead the franchise’s player meeting structure — team meetings, unit meetings, and individual conversations — ensuring every player is prepared, engaged, and knows exactly what is expected of them
  • Create an environment where international players feel welcomed, respected, and fully integrated into the team’s culture and competitive system from day one
  • Partner with the Director of Player Programs & Engagement on player welfare resources, ensuring athletes are supported holistically throughout the season

Player Development

  • Develop individual player development plans in partnership with the coordinators, identifying specific technical, physical, and mental performance goals for each player on the roster
  • Conduct or oversee all individual player evaluations throughout the season, providing direct, constructive, and specific feedback that accelerates development
  • Participate in the combine evaluation process, providing Head Coach perspective on personnel decisions that will shape the franchise’s roster
  • Build a player development culture where athletes feel challenged to improve daily and supported in the process — a culture that makes the franchise a destination for elite flag football talent
  • Identify and develop players who may have dual competitive and future coaching or leadership potential within the league ecosystem

Game-Day Operations & Broadcast Obligations

  • Lead all pre-game preparation — warm-up, final walk-through, team meeting, and the physical and mental readiness of the roster before kick-off
  • Manage the game-day sideline with professionalism, energy, and composure — setting the standard for how the franchise presents itself in the league’s broadcast-first environment
  • Fulfill all mandatory broadcast obligations, including the halftime coach interview and the post-game press availability, representing the franchise with the same professionalism expected on the field
  • Comply with the league’s in-game microphone program and all sideline conduct standards as outlined in the Flag Operations Manual
  • Conduct the post-game team meeting and coordinate with coordinators on the film review and preparation priorities for the following week

Coordinator Management & Staff Leadership

  • Provide clear direction, high expectations, and ongoing development for the Offensive Coordinator and Defensive Coordinator, holding both accountable to the competitive and cultural standard of the franchise
  • Facilitate a collaborative, high-performing coaching staff culture where the OC and DC are aligned, communicative, and functioning as a unified coaching unit
  • Participate in the Director of Coaching’s annual coaching development program, contributing to the cross-franchise learning culture and the elevation of coaching standards league-wide
  • Uphold and model the league’s Personal Conduct Policy, professional standards, and athlete welfare commitments in all interactions with players, staff, officials, and media

Community & League Representation

  • Represent the franchise and the league in community engagements, youth flag football clinics, and public appearances as scheduled by the Director of Community Relations
  • Serve as an ambassador for women’s professional flag football — the sport, the league, and the athletes — in all public-facing contexts
  • Build and maintain professional relationships with coaches across the league, within the flag football coaching community, and throughout the broader football ecosystem
Requirements
  • 5+ years of head coaching or senior coordinating experience at the professional, national team, or elite collegiate level in flag football or tackle football
  • Demonstrated success building and leading competitive teams, including scheme installation, player development, and in-game decision-making at a high level
  • Strong working knowledge of flag football rules
  • Proven ability to build a team culture — establishing trust with athletes, creating accountability, and developing a competitive identity that players invest in
  • Excellent communication and leadership skills — the ability to lead a diverse roster, manage two coordinators, and represent the franchise publicly with professionalism
  • Ability to fulfill all mandatory broadcast obligations, including live game interviews, in the league’s broadcast-first environment

Preferred:

  • Prior head coaching experience in a professional or high-level flag football environment, including IFAF national team or AFFL competition
  • Direct experience with Team USA flag football or coaching at the international level, with an established reputation within the global flag football community
  • Experience coaching women athletes and a demonstrated ability to build high-performance team cultures in women’s professional sports
  • Relationships within the flag football coaching community — national team staff, collegiate programs, and the growing professional flag football ecosystem
  • Experience with film software, scheme analytics, and data-informed game planning at the head coach level

You’ll be successful if:

  • Your players run through walls for you — not because you demand it, but because you’ve earned it
  • You build a culture that makes your franchise a place elite athletes want to come to and don’t want to leave
  • You make the right call in the biggest moments and your players are ready to execute it because of how you’ve prepared them
  • You see coaching in a broadcast-first league as an opportunity, not an obligation — you understand your voice and your presence are part of the product
  • You believe that winning the right way — with excellence, integrity, and genuine care for your athletes — is the only way worth winning

Benefits:

  • Equity ownership opportunities to allow employees to share in the company’s growth
  • Unlimited discretionary time off along with 15 paid holidays per year
  • Comprehensive health insurance options, including a 100% contribution Employee coverage option
  • Additional employee and family insurance coverage options with company contribution, including dental and vision
