Safety Specialist

 Job Summary

The Safety Specialist supports the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of the company’s Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) programs within a manufacturing environment across multiple sites. This role reports to the Corporate EHS Manager and works directly with operations, maintenance, supervisors, and employees to identify hazards, strengthen regulatory compliance, reduce injuries, near misses, and build a proactive safety culture.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

· Support the implementation of corporate safety policies, procedures and directives in all facilities in cooperation with local management and union safety committees.

· Participate in incident, injury, property-damage, near-miss, and environmental-event investigations; collect critical data, interview personnel, identify root causes, and track corrective and preventive actions.

· Support OSHA recordkeeping activities, including injury and illness data collection, case classification, and maintenance of required records.

· Conduct routine safety inspections, field observations, compliance audits, and facility walkthroughs.

· Identify unsafe conditions, at-risk behaviors, and regulatory gaps; communicate findings clearly and work with plant leadership to develop effective corrective actions.

· Serve as a primary point of contact for health and safety related questions or concerns.

· Perform risk assessments to improve current processes using the hierarchy of controls.

· Conduct and support employee training, toolbox talks, new-hire orientation, refresher training, and supervisor coaching on applicable EHS requirements and safe work practices.

· Assist with emergency-preparedness activities, including drills, emergency response planning, fire-prevention efforts, and coordination with site personnel.

· Manage Safety Performance KPI data for multiple sites.

· Receives layered audits from company vice presidents/plant managers and enters data into company data base for monthly EHS “Critical 4” High Risk Operations metrics.

· Data management for international facilities.

· Use leading and lagging indicators to develop risk reduction strategies.

· Communicate status, progress, and issues related to safety, health, and environment to the Corporate EHS Manager and Plant Leadership.

· Perform other Environmental Health and Safety related duties as assigned.

· Travel Required: Up to 30%.

Requirements

  

Education/Experience (all education/experience bullets are required unless noted as “preferred”)

· BS/BA Degree, preferably in Environmental Health and Safety, Safety Management or related field

· 3-5 years relevant experience in occupational health and safety

· Experience in a manufacturing environment; working with unions preferred

· Industrial Hygiene Experience (Preferred)

· Valid PA Driver’s License; good driving record required

· Graduate Safety Practitioner (GSP) certification preferred
