Position Overview:

The Veterinary Assistant will provide critical care nursing, triage patients, coordinate their care, and provide them with

care before and after surgery by taking their vitals, performing phlebotomy duties, and providing intramuscular (IM),

intravenous (IV) and subcutaneous (SQ) injections. They will discuss treatments and disease processes with clients,

systematize and track patient diagnostics, and communicate with clients, veterinarians and

pharmacies regarding patients' needs.

  • Duties/Responsibilities:
  • Provide animal nursing care to critically ill hospitalized patients in conjunction with veterinarians.
  • Client communication
  • Triaging patients including basic injury/illness assessment, gathering patient information and taking vital signs.
  • Administer injectable and inhalant anesthesia.
  • Patient care and treatments
  • Performing diagnostic testing including radiographs and lab work
  • Assisting with surgical procedures and patient monitoring
  • Assisting in taking radiographs
  • Medication calculation and administration
  • Placing IV catheters and maintaining feeding tubes and urinary catheters
  • Monitor Surgical procedures.
  • Lab Diagnostics
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Ability to work with or around sick animals, potentially hazardous materials, cleaning chemicals, gas anesthetics, and unpleasant odors.
  • Ability to always communicate professionally and effectively and maintain professionalism in emotionally charged/challenging situations.
  • Ability to provide high quality customer service embodying a yes culture for clients.
  • Ability to work effectively with computers, software, and electronics.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to stand for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to lift, walk, bend, twist, reach, push and squat most of the workday
  • The ability to frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 40 pounds with or without accommodation
