As an AmeriCorps State and National member, you can serve with the Library Corps at the Kansas City Public Library and make a lasting impact. Library Corps members serve as a tech coach and help patrons build digital skills, navigate technology, and access online resources. This role is focused on reducing social isolation and strengthening community connections. Whether you're helping someone send their first email or connecting a family to community resources, your service will make a difference. 


Library Corps is a one-year AmeriCorps position. 

  • Members must complete 1,200 service hours over the course of one year. 
  • Members will be scheduled for 25 hours per week. 
  • Members will receive a $795.50 bi-weekly living stipend, before FICA is withheld
  • Upon successful completion of their service term, members will receive a Segal AmeriCorps Education Award ($5,176.50).
  • The anticipated start date varies for Library Corps members.

Job Summary:
Library Corps members provide digital learning opportunities through drop-in sessions at Kansas City Public Library branches. Each member will conduct an anticipated 100 hours of drop-in sessions per month. Patrons and community partner site clients include, but are not limited to, older adults, refugees, English language learners, and people living below the poverty line. 


Essential Functions:  

  • Conduct drop-in sessions at assigned Library branch to assist patrons with technology, employment, and benefits-related needs.
  • Assist patrons with technology questions including, but not limited to, creating/using email, navigating mobile print service, utilizing common software.
  • Log all patron interactions for data tracking.
  • Collect a minimum of 10 patron surveys throughout the service year.

Marginal Functions: 

  • Create learning resources and how-to tech guides for patrons.
  • Offer one-on-one appointments for individualized support.
  • Use online tools to assess digital learning needs of patrons and connect them to appropriate learning modules. 
  • Teach classes to enhance digital literacy of community members.

You Need: 

  • Ability to lift or push 35 lbs. 
  • Ability to be seated for up to two hours.
  • This position may require working outdoors. 
  • Demonstrated ability to interact successfully with staff and public.
  • Ability to organize work effectively establishing service procedures and protocol.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work in a dynamic and challenging environment with a diverse population. 
  • Ability to answer a wide variety of queries regarding current Library resources and communicating accurately.

Bluford Branch (Starts October Tuesday 20th, 2026)

  • Monday – Friday: 1 pm – 6 pm 

North-East Branch (starts immediately after hire)

  • Monday - Friday: 10 am – 3 pm 

Plaza Branch (Starts Dec. 9th, 2026, Wednesday)

  • Monday – Thursday: 1pm – 7 pm 
Requirements

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  •  Familiar with one or more of the following operating systems: Microsoft, Android, iOS 
  • Proficient at navigating a variety of devices such as tablets, smartphones, laptops, Chromebooks 
  • Customer service 
  • Active listening 
  • Creative problem solving, including tech troubleshooting 

Academic, Training and Experience Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED.  
  • Basic tech skills.
  • Experience in customer service environment.

 Service Conditions: 

  • Service will mostly be performed in Library branches including drop-in sessions. 

Physical, Emotional, and Intellectual Demands:


Physical 

  •  Ability to lift 35 lbs. will occasionally be needed. 
  •  This position requires being seated for up to two hours.  

Emotional  

  • Patience is required while assisting patrons as they navigate technological difficulties. 
  • Ability to work in a dynamic and challenging environment with a diverse population. 
  • Position requires responding to patrons in various emotional states, including those experiencing mental health crises. Members need to respond with empathy while maintaining boundaries. 

Intellectual 

  • Duties include comprehensive understanding of federal, state, and local benefits. 
  • Ability to analyze and troubleshoot technical problems. 

 Equipment Used: 

  • Computers and smart phones.
  • Internet hotspots.
  • USB and other external storage devices.

Special conditions of service:

This position will have access to vulnerable populations according to AmeriCorps. This includes children 17 years of age and younger, persons age 60 and older, and people with disabilities. Must pass national and state background checks. Must be U.S. citizen. 


Other Items: 

Library Corps members must wear the AmeriCorps logo at all times while serving hours. T-shirts, pins, and lanyards will be provided by the Library.
