Description

As a Carpenter with Salem Sports Events (SSE), you’ll build and assemble the wood components, structures, and finished products used in our events, installations, and experiential environments.


This is a hands-on role focused on quality craftsmanship, accuracy, and productivity. You’ll work with a variety of woodworking equipment, hand tools, and power tools to cut, assemble, modify, and repair materials according to project specifications.

The ideal candidate takes pride in their work, pays close attention to detail, works well with a team, and can adapt as project priorities change. 


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Measure, cut or shape wood, plastic, or other materials
  • Layout, cut and assemble a variety of wood components
  • Operate a variety of wood working machines, as well as hand and power tools
  • Attach parts and subassemblies together to form completed units, using dowels, nails, screws and/or clamps
  • Bonds, bolts, rivets, screws, clips, caulks, or bonds component parts to assemble products.
  • Build, repair, install items, such as cabinet, counter tops, shelving, moldings, and partition walls
  • Sets up and operates machines such as table saws, chop saws, drill presses, punches, and routers to cut and manipulate materials for carpentry.
  • Install hardware such as hinges, handles, catches, drawers, pulls and slides
  • Responsible for general shop upkeep, safety, and productivity
Requirements

 Knowledge and Skills: 

  • Ability to read measurements and blueprints for the construction of wood structures
  • Ability to set up and operate machines such as table saws, chop saws, drill presses, punches, and routers to cut and manipulate materials
  • Ability to bolt, rivet, screw, clip, caulk, or bond components parts to assemble products
  • Attention to detail is a must – “measure twice-cut once” mentality 
  • Positive attitude and a strong work ethic
  • Ability to work in a team environment
  • Must be flexible with the ability to shift gears as priorities change
  • Must be willing to work overtime as needed

Education and Work Experience:

  • Minimum of 2 years woodworking/carpentry experience 
  • Valid driver’s license

Physical Demands and Work Environment: The physical demands and work environment described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.   • Physical Demands: This position lifts heavy objects of up to 50 pounds regularly and 70 lbs. occasionally, walks and stands for long periods of time and performs strenuous physical labor under adverse field conditions. The employee lifts, pushes, pulls and carries objects and uses abdominal and lower back muscles to provide support over time without fatigue. The position requires good manual dexterity (hand, hand with arm, two hands) and multi-limb coordination. The position requires the ability to quickly move arms and legs.

Work Environment: This position regularly works in workshop conditions that include cold, heat and humidity. The noise level in the work environment is commensurate with a construction site. This position secondarily works in outside conditions that include inclement weather, heat, and humidity. The noise level in the work environment is commensurate with a construction site.
Expected Hours of Work/Travel: This is a full-time position in the Winston Salem office during regular business hours. Days and hours of work are dictated by the nature of the scope of work which can include long hours and weekend work. This position can involve travel of up to 20+ days per year.
