About the Position
The Pastry Cook supports the preparation and production of high-quality desserts, pastries, breads, and specialty baked goods for daily dining service and private events.
Working under the direction of pastry and culinary leadership, this hands-on position supports the production of cakes, plated desserts, breads, and other pastry items. The ideal candidate brings precision, creativity, and a genuine passion for pastry while consistently meeting The Argyle’s standards for taste, presentation, cleanliness, and service.
Essential Responsibilities
- Prepare and bake cakes, cookies, tarts, custards, mousses, breads, and other pastry items.
- Assist with assembling, finishing, and plating desserts for daily service and private events.
- Follow established recipes and instructions from pastry and culinary leadership, with careful attention to quality, consistency, presentation, and portion size.
- Complete daily preparation assignments to support à la carte dining, banquets, and special events.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and efficient workstation throughout each shift.
- Properly label, date, rotate, and store ingredients and finished products.
- Monitor pastry inventory and promptly communicate shortages or product needs to pastry and culinary leadership.
- Help receive, inspect, and properly store deliveries.
- Rotate inventory to maintain freshness and minimize waste.
- Clean and sanitize work areas, tools, and equipment in accordance with food-safety and health regulations.
- Follow proper hygiene, food-handling, sanitation, and workplace-safety procedures.
- Assist with end-of-shift cleaning and dishwashing responsibilities as needed.
- Work collaboratively with the pastry and culinary teams to meet production and service timelines.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Culinary or pastry certificate, degree, or equivalent training preferred.
- One to two years of experience in a pastry, bakery, or professional kitchen preferred.
- Fine-dining, hotel, banquet, or private-club experience is a plus.
- Current food-safety certification or ability to obtain certification as required.
- Passion for pastry arts and a willingness to learn new techniques.
- Strong attention to detail and precision when following recipes and plating desserts.
- Ability to work efficiently under pressure and meet service deadlines.
- Strong communication, organization, and teamwork skills.
- Dependable, professional, and committed to maintaining high standards.
- Ability to work a flexible schedule based on business needs, including mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays.
Physical and Work Requirements
- Regularly stand, walk, talk, hear, reach, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, and use hands to handle tools, equipment, and ingredients.
- Frequently lift, carry, push, or transport packages, cases, and other objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
- Possess the close and distance vision necessary to prepare, inspect, and present food safely and accurately.
- Work in hot, cold, damp, and variable-temperature environments.
- Work around ovens, mixers, sharp utensils, cleaning products, dust, and smoke.
- Work primarily indoors, with occasional outdoor duties as business needs require.
- Perform frequent handwashing and follow all sanitation requirements.
- Safely work in an environment where potential hazards include burns, slips, trips, cuts, broken glass, and metal containers.
