Key Responsibilities:
- Own and manage the estimating function supporting customer proposals and commercial opportunities, including development of accurate, timely, and comprehensive project cost estimates.
- Serve as a customer-facing commercial and estimating resource, participating in customer discovery, qualification, technical, and proposal discussions to understand requirements, ask effective clarifying questions, and support development of solutions that meet customer needs.
- Develop project estimates incorporating equipment, materials, labor, subcontractor, and other applicable project cost components, working directly with customers, Sales, Proposal Management, Engineering, EPC, Supply Chain, Finance, and other stakeholders to translate customer requirements into executable project scope and cost assumptions.
- Present and explain estimates, cost drivers, scope assumptions, risks, and alternatives in a clear and credible manner to customers and internal stakeholders, while identifying gaps or areas requiring additional clarification.
- Review customer contracts, RFP terms, and other commercial documents from a pricing and estimating perspective; identify provisions that may affect project scope, cost, schedule, risk, or execution assumptions; and coordinate with Sales, Legal, Structuring, Engineering, and EPC to ensure those impacts are reflected in the estimate and commercial approach.
- Build trusted relationships with customers and internal business partners through strong interpersonal skills, responsiveness, active listening, and a practical, solutions-oriented approach.
- Establish, document, and continuously improve standardized estimating processes, methodologies, tools, templates, and controls to improve estimate quality, consistency, and efficiency.
- Develop and maintain historical cost information, estimating benchmarks, labor assumptions, equipment costs, and other reference data used to support project estimates.
- Manage estimating activities and priorities across active opportunities to ensure estimating deliverables align with proposal schedules, customer requirements, and internal approval timelines.
- Support complex, strategic, and non-standard opportunities through development of appropriate estimating approaches and cost models.
- Analyze estimated versus actual project costs and incorporate lessons learned into future estimates, assumptions, and estimating methodologies.
- Develop metrics and reporting to measure estimating workload, turnaround time, accuracy, and other key performance indicators.
- Identify opportunities to improve estimating automation, data quality, processes, and tools to support increased proposal volume and organizational scalability.
- Serve as the subject matter expert for estimating methodologies, cost assumptions, and estimating practices across the Pricing & Proposals organization.
- Build the foundation for a scalable estimating function and, if additional estimating resources are added, provide leadership, onboarding, coaching, and performance oversight.
- Other responsibilities as directed by supervisor.
Basic (Required) Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Construction Management, Business, Finance, or a related field, or equivalent relevant experience.
- 5+ years of experience in estimating, project pricing, construction estimating, cost engineering, project management, or a related discipline.
- Demonstrated experience independently developing and reviewing project estimates, including equipment, material, labor, subcontractor, and other project cost components.
- Demonstrated experience working directly with customers in a commercial, project, estimating, engineering, or similar environment, with the ability to understand customer needs and translate them into project scope and pricing requirements.
- Experience reviewing customer contracts, RFP terms, or other commercial agreements as part of a pricing, estimating, project, or commercial role, with the ability to identify and communicate provisions that affect scope, cost, schedule, risk, and pricing assumptions.
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build credibility and effective working relationships with customers, Sales, technical teams, and senior leaders.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to evaluate cost information, identify inconsistencies and risks, and make sound recommendations.
- Demonstrated ability to independently manage multiple projects, priorities, and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong proficiency with Microsoft Excel and experience working with estimating, ERP, CRM, or related business systems.
- Strong verbal, written, and presentation skills, including the ability to explain complex technical and cost information clearly to both technical and non-technical customer and internal audiences.
- Demonstrated ability to work cross-functionally and drive completion of time-sensitive deliverables.
- Experience in distributed energy, power generation, electrical infrastructure, construction, EPC, or another project-based industry.
- Experience building or scaling an estimating function, process, or capability.
- Previous experience leading, mentoring, or developing estimators or other technical/commercial professionals.
- Experience developing standardized estimating templates, cost models, historical cost databases, or estimating tools.
- Experience analyzing estimated versus actual project costs and incorporating lessons learned into future estimating methodologies.
- Experience with Salesforce or similar CRM platforms.
- Experience supporting customer-facing discovery, technical, pricing, or proposal discussions throughout the sales or project development lifecycle.
- Experience supporting commercial or contract reviews in partnership with Sales and Legal, including translating negotiated terms into pricing, scope, and execution assumptions.
- Customer-focused relationship builder who is collaborative, approachable, resourceful, and comfortable engaging across technical, commercial, operational, and customer teams.
- Ability to challenge assumptions constructively and drive decisions using data.
