Summary Perform general carpentry work to include building, installing, repairing, and maintaining of structures, furniture, doors, windows, etc. as directed. Operate associated power and hand tools and equipment. Ideal candidate will have expertise in finish carpentry.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
- Studies blueprints, sketches, or building plans for information pertaining to type of material required, such as lumber or fiberboard, and dimensions of structure or fixture to be fabricated.
- Selects specified type of lumber or other materials.
- Prepares layout.
- Shapes materials to prescribed measurements.
- Assembles cut and shaped materials and fastens them together with nails, dowel pins, or glue.
- Verifies trueness of structure with plumb bob and carpenter's level.
- Welds metal parts to steel structural members.
- Build and install door and window framings; install locks, door knobs, and other hardware.
- Repair and maintain doors, floors, windows, partitions, ceiling and building exteriors.
- Build, repair, and refinish wood furniture and fixtures to include cabinets, tables, shelving, bulletin boards, etc.
- Maintain carpentry tools in working order.
- Erect, maintain, and dismantles walls and structures.
- Hang and finish drywall as needed.
- Repairs and prepares surfaces to be painted, including patching, cleaning, scraping, sanding, priming, etc.
- Takes protective measures to cover floors and furnishings in the immediate vicinity of the areas to be painted.
- Uses all safety precautions when erecting, using, and tearing down ladders and scaffolding.
- Paints repaired/prepared surfaced with proper finishes.
- Keeps job site clean and in order which may include washing walls, vacuuming floors, moving furnishings, etc.
- Works cooperatively, efficiently, courteously and professionally with other operations and maintenance trades as well as faculty and staff to ensure the least possible disruption occurs during the application of paint.

Education and/or Experience
High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or one to three months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.
Mathematical Skills

Must possess valid Tennessee driver's license.

Knowledge of applicable safety rules and practices. Ability to operate and maintain various hand and power tools, including planers, jointers, drill presses, power saws, and sanders. Ability to read sketches, prints, and diagrams.
