Geotechnical Engineering Intern
Job Type
Internship
Description

Westwood Professional Services

The Geotechnical Intern will join a team supporting subsurface investigation and geotechnical engineering analysis for public infrastructure projects, including roadways, bridges, airports, and municipal facilities for DOTs, counties, cities, and other public agencies. Projects range from routine pavement and foundation investigations to complex slope stability and ground improvement designs supporting critical infrastructure. This position offers direct exposure to the field and laboratory work that informs geotechnical engineering recommendations.

As a Geotechnical Intern, the selected candidate will learn to apply industry standards and specifications — while assisting with boring logs, laboratory testing, and geotechnical report preparation. The intern will build foundational skills in soil classification, field data collection, and the engineering analysis software and equipment used across the geotechnical practice.

Requirements

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist with subsurface exploration programs, including logging soil borings, test pits, and monitoring well installations at project sites.
  • Perform geotechnical laboratory testing on soil and rock samples, including classification, moisture content, Atterberg limits, and compaction testing.
  • Support preparation of geotechnical engineering reports, including boring logs, laboratory data summaries, and engineering recommendations for foundations and pavements.
  • Help develop an understanding of client interests and assist in identifying approaches to address client concerns in the performance of project work.
  • Actively work with team members across the public infrastructure projects to ensure effective communication and project progress.
  • Travel to project sites as necessary to observe drilling operations, collect field data, and interface directly with clients and contractors.

Required Qualifications:

  • Currently enrolled in an undergraduate engineering program, preferably in Civil, Survey, Engineering Tech, Environmental, Geotechnical Engineering, or other related field.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to interact professionally with clients, management, and design team members.
  • Willingness to learn in a flexible, cross-disciplinary work environment.
  • Willingness to attend site visits and perform work in outdoor field conditions, including active drilling and construction sites, on occasion.
  • Valid driver's license and reliable transportation.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Preferred Qualifications:

The following qualifications are preferred but not required for consideration:

  • Relevant industry experience through engineering coursework projects or prior internships in geotechnical, civil, or construction materials engineering.
