Position Summary
The Facilities & Grounds Maintenance Specialist is responsible for maintaining the buildings, grounds, and general physical assets across our four scrap yard locations.
This is a hands-on, handyman-style position for someone who enjoys fixing, building, improving, and maintaining facilities. The ideal candidate is versatile and capable of handling a wide range of projects including construction and carpentry, painting, landscaping, facility repairs, and general property maintenance. Welding and fabrication experience is strongly preferred.
The goal of this position is simple: keep our properties, buildings, and assets safe, functional, clean, professional, and well maintained.
This position will travel between company locations based on maintenance needs and project priorities.
Key Responsibilities
Building & Facility Maintenance
- Perform general repairs and preventative maintenance on company buildings and facilities.
- Complete basic construction, carpentry, framing, trim, and repair projects.
- Repair doors, gates, fencing, walls, ceilings, shelving, cabinets, and other facility components.
- Perform interior and exterior painting, patching, caulking, and finishing.
- Identify building deterioration or damage and address issues before they become larger repairs.
- Assist with minor plumbing and other basic facility repairs within the employee's skill level.
- Coordinate with management when a project requires a licensed or specialized contractor.
Grounds & Property Maintenance
- Maintain the overall appearance and condition of all company properties.
- Perform landscaping, weed control, trimming, cleanup, and general grounds maintenance.
- Maintain parking areas, entrances, fencing, gates, signage, and common areas.
- Remove debris and address trip hazards, damaged areas, and other property concerns.
- Help ensure each location maintains a clean, organized, and professional appearance.
Welding & Fabrication
Welding experience preferred.
- Perform basic welding and fabrication repairs when qualified.
- Repair gates, fencing, railings, brackets, racks, containers, and other metal components.
- Fabricate simple solutions for facility and operational needs.
- Maintain welding tools and equipment in safe working condition.
Construction & Improvement Projects
- Assist with facility upgrades, remodels, and improvement projects.
- Build walls, storage areas, workstations, shelving, barriers, enclosures, and other structures as needed.
- Install fixtures, hardware, signage, cabinets, shelving, and facility accessories.
- Measure, cut, assemble, install, and finish materials accurately.
- Help management develop practical, cost-effective solutions to property and facility needs.
Company Asset Upkeep
- Help maintain company-owned physical assets outside of production equipment.
- Inspect company property for damage, deterioration, or needed repairs.
- Maintain tools, ladders, pressure washers, landscaping equipment, maintenance equipment, and supplies assigned to the position.
- Keep maintenance materials and commonly used repair parts organized and stocked.
- Protect company property by completing preventative maintenance rather than waiting for assets to fail.
- Report significant damage, safety concerns, or repair needs to management promptly.
Multi-Location Responsibilities
This position supports four company locations and must be comfortable traveling between facilities.
The Facilities & Grounds Maintenance Specialist will:
- Conduct routine property walkthroughs.
- Maintain an ongoing repair and project list for each location.
- Prioritize safety-related and operationally critical repairs.
- Coordinate projects with Location Managers.
- Complete preventative maintenance before problems become expensive repairs.
- Communicate project status, material needs, and anticipated completion dates.
- Take ownership of seeing assigned projects through to completion.
Qualifications
Required:
- valid drivers license
- Strong general handyman and maintenance skills.
- Experience with construction, carpentry, painting, landscaping, concrete or property maintenance.
- Ability to safely operate hand and power tools.
- Ability to troubleshoot problems and determine practical repair solutions.
- Ability to work independently and manage projects across multiple locations.
- Valid driver's license and ability to travel between company facilities.
- Ability to perform physically demanding work in indoor and outdoor environments.
Preferred:
- Welding and metal fabrication experience.
- Commercial or industrial property maintenance experience.
- Construction or remodeling experience.
- Basic plumbing knowledge.
- Basic electrical knowledge.
- Experience repairing fencing, gates, concrete, metal structures, and industrial facilities.
- Experience operating skid steers, forklifts, lifts, or similar equipment.
Physical & Work Environment Requirements
Because this position supports active scrap metal facilities, the employee must be comfortable working in an industrial environment.
The position may require:
- Working outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- Walking on uneven industrial surfaces.
- Climbing ladders and working at heights when properly equipped.
- Bending, kneeling, reaching, pushing, and pulling.
- Regularly lifting and carrying tools, materials, and supplies.
- Working around heavy equipment and active scrap yard operations.
- Wearing required PPE and following all company safety procedures.
