Job Title: Laborer                                                                              Department: DFR Diocesan Cemeteries

Reports to: Cemetery Manager and Foreman Job                   Classification: Hourly

The Cemetery Worker/Laborer performs skilled and manual work in the maintenance, operation, and improvement of cemetery grounds. The Cemetery Worker/Laborer will keep the cemetery grounds clean and attractive to enhance the image of the facility and to provide a suitable environment for staff and visitors. 

Duties/Responsibilities:

• Operate dump trucks and other cemetery vehicles, safely maneuvering through narrow passageways and between rows of headstones and monuments.
• Operate powered and commercial-duty equipment such as ride-on and walk-behind mowers, string trimmers, hedge trimmers, blowers, chain saws, spreaders, irrigation systems, and pneumatic tools including jackhammers.
• Assist with the preparation, opening, and closing of graves, including shoveling, leveling, raking earth, and hauling cement and related materials using wheelbarrows. 
• Perform preventive grounds maintenance including but not limited to mowing, planting, trimming, leaf removal, snow removal, litter collection and making minor repairs on equipment and tools used in daily operations including but not limited to oil changes, blade sharpening, changing air filters and spark plugs. 
• Evaluate ground conditions and recommend or implement improvements to maintain appearance and functionality.
• Provide directions and courteous assistance to visitors as needed.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.
• Work week Monday-Friday with occasional Saturdays as needed.

Required Skills/Abilities:

• Valid driver's license and driving experience required. Must qualify under the organization's vehicle insurance policy.
• Knowledge of the safe operation and maintenance of groundskeeping equipment.
• Knowledge of ground care practices, including the use of chemicals, fertilizers, and irrigation systems.
• Ability to operate mowers, edgers, blowers, trimmers, spreaders, irrigation systems, and related gardening tools.
• Ability to perform heavy physical labor safely and efficiently.
• Ability to operate equipment effectively, organize work tasks, and maintain confidentiality. 
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Education and Experience:

• One (1) year of groundskeeping or related experience required.
• High School education or equivalent.

Physical Requirements:

• Ability to safely lift seventy-five (75) pounds.
• Ability to perform sustained physical labor in outdoor conditions.
• Frequent bending, stooping, kneeling, crawling, and use of hand and power tools.
• The ability to operate powered equipment.

Schedule:

Full-time Monday through Friday, occasional Saturdays.
