The Role: Engineering Technician
Who You Are:
We are looking for an Engineering Technician with strong hands-on debugging and hardware bring-up skills to support our Product Engineering team. You will be the front line on board-level troubleshooting — isolating faults, running root cause analysis (RCA) on field and production failures, and bringing up new boards through prototype and pilot builds.
This role works closely with our Electrical Engineers across both our fielded emergency phone products and our next-generation, connected/digital platform — giving you exposure to legacy hardware sustaining and new product development side by side.
Who We Are:
Established in 1989 Kings III is a growing, dynamic company. We’re a six-time winner of DFW Top Workplaces and nationally as a USA Today Top Workplace in 2020-2025. We’re on a mission for change – for our communities, our customers, and our company. If you see yourself as a builder and change agent, this is the right place for you.
More than 12% of our employees have been with the company for 10+ years, and an impressive 25% have been with us 5+ years. How do we do it? Here's what our employees say. We seek out creative employees who love opportunities for continuous learning and growth. We value innovation in not just our products, but the way we work, sell, and grow every day. We celebrate change and are always looking for ways to do things better!
What You’ll Do:
Debug & Root Cause Analysis
- Troubleshoot and debug electrical/firmware issues at the board level using schematics, oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and JTAG/SWD tools
- Perform root cause analysis on field-returned units and production failures; document findings and drive corrective action with EEs
- Support failure analysis initiatives aimed at reducing field service calls, including teardown, testing, and defect trending
- Isolate intermittent and hard-to-reproduce faults across analog/POTS, cellular, and digital hardware variants
Board Bring-Up & Test
- Bring up new PCB revisions from first article through pilot build — power-on testing, functional verification, and issue triage
- Build, rework, and repair prototype and production boards (soldering, rework of SMT/through-hole components)
- Develop and run test procedures and fixtures to validate hardware functionality and firmware behavior
- Support environmental, EMC/EMI, and pre-compliance testing ahead of formal certification
Cross-Functional Support
- Partner with Electrical Engineers to translate debug findings into design or firmware corrective actions
- Support manufacturing and test engineering with troubleshooting guides, test fixtures, and yield issue resolution
- Maintain lab equipment, test fixtures, and documentation for repeatable, traceable debug processes
- Assist with component-level obsolescence testing and second-source qualification
What You’ll Bring:
- Associate degree in Electronics Engineering Technology, or equivalent hands-on experience; 3+ years in hardware debug, test, or bring-up roles
- Strong hands-on skills with oscilloscopes, multimeters, logic analyzers, and soldering/rework of SMT and through-hole components
- Experience reading schematics and PCB layouts to trace and isolate faults
- Working knowledge of embedded systems — able to use JTAG/SWD debuggers and basic firmware flashing/debug tools
- Methodical, documented approach to root cause analysis (5-whys, fishbone, or similar)
- Comfortable working with cellular-connected devices and basic RF test equipment
Nice to Have:
- Experience with life-safety, security, or emergency communications hardware
- Exposure to environmental or EMC/EMI pre-compliance testing
- Basic scripting (Python) for test automation or data logging
- Basic firmware debugging skills (reading C code, setting breakpoints, interpreting register/memory state) to help isolate whether a fault is hardware or firmware-rooted
