Gap Year Medical Assistant – Pre-Med and Pre-PA
About the Position
Tareen Dermatology is seeking motivated pre-medical and pre-physician assistant graduates who plan to spend one to two gap years gaining direct patient-care experience before attending medical or PA school.
As a full-time Medical Assistant, you will work alongside dermatology providers in a fast-paced clinical environment. You will gain hands-on experience with patient care, medical documentation, clinical procedures, pathology, and the daily operations of a dermatology practice.

Position Details

- FLSA status: Non-exempt
- Pay: $20.00 per hour
- Schedule: Monday through Friday, daytime hours. No weekends or holidays.
- Work setting: In-person
- Minimum commitment: 14 months
- Anticipated start dates: January, March, June, July, or August 2027

Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in a science-related field completed before the position’s start date
- Interest in pursuing medical school or physician assistant school
- Availability to work full-time for a minimum of 14 months
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Proficiency in typing, spelling, punctuation, and grammar
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
- Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced clinical environment
- Ability to follow written and verbal instructions
- Strong computer skills
- Professional demeanor and respect for patient privacy
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a healthcare team
- Willingness to travel to alternate Tareen Dermatology clinic locations as needed
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience in a medical or patient-care setting
- Familiarity with anatomy and medical terminology
- Experience using an electronic medical record system (EMR)
Responsibilities
- Prepare patients for their visits and escort them to examination rooms.
- Interview patients and verify their medical history, medications, vital signs, reason for the visit, and other relevant information.
- Accompany providers during patient examinations and accurately document medical histories, physical examinations, assessments, and treatment plans.
- Document clinical visits and procedures in the electronic medical record under the provider’s direction.
- Ensure clinical data, laboratory results, test results, and provider interpretations are accurately recorded.
- Generate and submit orders as directed by the provider.
- Communicate provider-reviewed pathology results and other clinical information to patients as directed.
- Answer and return patient telephone calls promptly and professionally.
- Performs procedural site preparation in accordance with physician orders and established clinical protocols.
- Prepares, labels, and transports tissue specimens according to established pathology and laboratory procedures.
- Applies postoperative dressings and provides patients with post-procedure instructions as directed by the physician.
- Serve as a liaison between providers, patients, and clinical support staff.
- Prepare, clean, organize, and stock examination rooms.
- Support efficient patient flow throughout the clinic.
- Follow HIPAA, OSHA, infection-control, and workplace safety requirements.
- Travel to alternate clinic locations when required.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

Applicants will be asked to provide their top three preferred clinic locations. Preferences will be considered, but specific placements cannot be guaranteed. Each employee is assigned a primary and secondary home location. Because most of our providers see patients at two clinic locations throughout the week, your location schedule will follow your assigned provider’s schedule. Provider assignments will be determined after your start date based on clinic needs and scheduling.

Work Environment
This position is performed in a busy outpatient dermatology clinic. Medical Assistants work directly with patients, providers, and clinical support staff throughout the workday.
