We’re looking for a Portable GC Technician to support field-based gas analysis and testing for our energy lab team in Midland, TX.


In this role, you’ll travel to client locations to perform gas analysis using portable gas chromatography and related field-testing equipment. You’ll work independently to conduct testing, verify calibrations, troubleshoot routine equipment issues, maintain accurate documentation, and help ensure reliable analytical results across a variety of oil and gas field environments.


What You’ll Do

  • Operate portable gas chromatography (GC) systems and related field-testing equipment at onshore and offshore client locations
  • Perform gas and liquid sample testing, including portable GC analysis, H2S testing, and chilled mirror measurements, as assigned
  • Review and document chromatographic data using EZ Chrom and accurately record and communicate analytical results
  • Perform calibrations, verification or bump checks, gas replacements, and routine preventive maintenance to maintain instrument readiness
  • Identify and troubleshoot routine equipment, mechanical, or sample-flow issues and escalate concerns when appropriate
  • Collect, handle, transport, and maintain custody of hazardous and non-hazardous samples and materials in a safe and traceable manner
  • Coordinate schedules, site access, and service requirements with clients and SPL team members
  • Maintain assigned company vehicles, instruments, calibration equipment, laptops, tools, and field supplies
  • Complete service records, analytical data, field documentation, and other required paperwork accurately and on time
  • Support shop or office activities during non-field periods and assist with after-hours or on-call assignments as needed
  • Perform other duties as assigned
Requirements

What Makes You a Great Fit

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; vocational or technical training in gas chromatography, oil and gas operations, instrumentation, or a related technical field preferred
  • 1+ years of relevant experience in a laboratory, oil and gas operations, industrial field service, or similar technical environment
  • Demonstrated mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting skills, including identifying equipment or operating issues and taking appropriate action
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and general computer applications
  • Previous experience with EZ Chrom or similar analytical software preferred
  • Oilfield safety training or certifications such as PEC, H2S, First Aid, or similar credentials are a plus
  • Valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record required

Work Schedule & Travel

  • Full-time, field-based position
  • Ability to work flexible and extended schedules, including overtime, evenings, weekends, varying shifts, and on-call rotations as required
  • Regular local driving is required to support client and field assignments, with occasional out-of-town or overnight travel
  • Work may be performed in varying weather, terrain, and industrial conditions and requires appropriate PPE
