Adopt-A-Family is a nonprofit 501(c) (3) dedicated to strengthening families with children to achieve stability and self-sufficiency. We provide support services to homeless families and those families who are at risk of becoming homeless.
POSITION SUMMARY:
Adopt-A-Family is seeking a Temporary After School Counselor to provide coverage during a staff leave of absence. This position is responsible for supervising and engaging elementary-aged children in our after-school program, primarily serving Kindergarten and 1st Grade students. The ideal candidate will create a safe, nurturing, and structured environment while supporting children's academic, social, and emotional development.
This temporary assignment is expected to last up to four (4) months.
Work Schedule:
• Monday through Friday, 1:00 PM - 6:00 PM beginning in October
• Up to 8-hour shifts on days when Palm Beach County schools are closed for holidays, teacher workdays, and school breaks
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Child Supervision & Program Activities
• Provide continuous supervision and ensure the safety and well-being of children at all times.
• Implement and create (as needed) age-appropriate lesson plans.
• Plan and facilitate age-appropriate recreational, educational, and enrichment activities.
• Assist students with homework and academic support as needed.
• Foster positive relationships and encourage social-emotional growth.
• Support children in developing problem-solving, teamwork, and communication skills.
• Maintain appropriate behavior management practices and classroom expectations.
Classroom & Program Environment
• Maintain a clean, organized, and welcoming program environment.
• Ensure compliance with childcare licensing and safety requirements.
• Assist with setup, cleanup, and daily program operations.
• Supervise children during indoor and outdoor activities.
Communication & Teamwork
• Communicate effectively with program leadership regarding student needs, concerns, or incidents.
• Work collaboratively with coworkers, volunteers, and program staff.
• Participate in staff meetings and trainings as required.
• Provide excellent customer service to children, families, and community partners.
Education & Certification
• High School Diploma or equivalent is required: Bachelor’s degree preferred
• 40 Hour Childcare Training, Child Development Associate (CDA), or School Age Certification or related coursework is desired
• Successful completion of a Level 2 background check and fingerprinting prior to hire and maintained as required by state regulations.
• Holds active CPR and First Aid certification (Adult, Child, and Infant)
Experience
• Minimum one (1) year of experience working with children in an after-school program, childcare setting, summer camp, school, or similar environment required.
• Two (2) or more years of experience preferred.
• Experience working with elementary-aged children, K-1st grade, strongly preferred.
• Experience supporting children with diverse learning and behavioral needs is a plus.

Compensation: $23 to $25 per hour, depending on experience
