Description

The English Language Instructor (ELI) teaches multiple weekly English classes to those interested in improving English language skills. Programs include, but are not limited to, English Basics, Missouri Driver’s License Written Exam, Financial Literacy, English for CNA, and English for Citizenship. In these classes, the instructor connects with students personally and encourages them in their journey to learning American English. 


This is a part-time position with an hourly rate of $20.28, with benefits. 

 

Schedule 1 (20-hours per week)

  • Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, & Friday: 8:30 am - 2:30 pm

Schedule 2 (20-hours per week)

  • Tuesday, Wednesday, &Thursday: 2 pm - 7:30 pm
  • Saturday: 9 am - 12:30 pm 

Note: Schedule is subject to change to cover programs. For non-emergency coverage, at least one week's advance notice will be given. 


Location

North-East Branch: 6000 Wilson Avenue, KCMO, 64123. 


Job Duties (Essential Functions)

  1. Be familiar with the English language development curriculum provided by the Library.
  2. Responsible for preparing adequately for classes each week.
  3. Provide quality English Language Development instruction to participants.
  4. Responsible for recording attendance according to department procedure.
  5. Ensure that the classroom is an open, welcoming, and inclusive space.
  6. Work with volunteer tutors to present a cohesive and inviting environment to learn.
  7. Hold classes at the North-East Branch at various times of the day.
Requirements
  1. Experience with literacy coaching, language learning, or tutoring is highly preferred.
  2. Must have good classroom management skills
  3. Must be able to work with and accommodate students of different skill levels at once
  4. Experience working with non-native English-speaking persons
  5. Experience working with volunteers
  6. Must have a desire and ability to work with individuals from diverse backgrounds
  7. Strong interpersonal skills, including patience, empathy, and cultural awareness
  8. Proficiency in English required; additional consideration will be given to individuals who are proficient in any non-English languages spoken in Jackson County, MO, including Spanish, ASL, Vietnamese, French, Arabic, and Swahili
  9. Excellent written and oral communication skills and advanced computer skills.
  10. Valid driver’s license.

Required Education and Experience 

  • TEFL, TESOL, TESL, or equivalent certification - currently pursuing or already certified.
  • Public library and/or customer service experience.
  • Experience working with non-native English-speaking persons.
  • 2 years experience in teaching English Language coursework.
  • Bachelor's or advanced degree preferred and will count towards teaching experience requirement.

Work Environment

Work is performed at the North-East library or partner sites throughout the district. Primary workspace is shared with co-workers in an office environment, other work will be performed in a public space amongst staff and patrons from a diverse socio-economic community.
