Summary

While upholding the Star Valley Health mission, vision and values this key position is responsible for the overseeing the delivery of quality patient care through the assessment of the patient upon admission to the pre-op area, the operating room and/or the post-op area, and on a continuing basis. The Surgical Coordinator is responsible for directing and coordinating all surgical care from Pre-Operative through discharge. The Surgical Coordinator collaborates with other professional disciplines to ensure effective and efficient patient care delivery and the achievement of desired patient outcomes. This position collaborates between Pre-Op, Intra-Op, and Post Op to ensure timely management of surgery, while overseeing direction and communication between staff. The Surgical Coordinator leads by example of essential communication and collaboration between all interdisciplinary departments. This is an at-will position.

Job Duties

• Ensures that nursing staff provides safe, therapeutic quality to patients by utilizing the nursing process in a timely manner throughout the Peri-Operative process
• Sets appropriate priorities for staff, while coordinating nursing interventions to enhance achievement of expected outcomes, and to ensure readiness for discharge.
• Able to adapt and respond appropriately to emergent situations
• Maintains a good working relationship both within the department and with other departments
• Consults other departments as appropriate to provide for an interdisciplinary approach to the patient’s needs
• Assists in alleviating unforeseen circumstances of the surgery schedule such as cancelations, add-ons, running ahead or behind schedule, and making changes as appropriate
• Demonstrates an ability to be flexible, organized, and function under stressful situations
• Communicates appropriate information regarding patient conditions to those who require the information including surgeons, anesthesia, management, and other staff as seen fit between departments
• Completes administrative tasks as delegated to by the OR Director
• Appropriately makes staffing assignments based on patient census and acuity level
• Provides direction to all staff to ensure adequate lunches, breaks, and staffing assignments
• Oversees day to day surgical staffing needs of the department and makes changes according to those needs
• Supervise and delegate to RNs, CNAs, Surgical Techs and Sterile Techs as needed for patient care
• Shows expertise in safety principles, asepsis, sterile technique, and universal precautions
• Assesses, anticipates and implements appropriate management throughout the surgical process
• Coordinates and oversees the orientation, training and development of nursing and ancillary staff as requested
• Maintains competencies to function in RN role within specific area
• Will take responsibility of learning to become an educator within all areas of the department
• Must be able to flex hours as needed and/or requested by director
• Interacts professionally as liaison between administration, patients, physicians, and other healthcare providers.
• Document and perform nursing care in assigned area based on standards of care and practice, and in accordance with SV Health policies and procedures, including but not limited to standards for confidentiality, infection prevention, safety (OSHA), attendance, punctuality and personal appearance
• Serves as a role model and mentor, providing direction and leadership to other staff
• Keep OR Director informed of problems or issues in regards to staff and/or patient needs
• Demonstrates understanding of established emergency procedures, including providing patient care
• Participates in Quality improvement activities including identification of opportunities for cost reductions and efficiencies
• Works to achieve and maintain regulatory certification and accreditation
• Demonstrate responsibility and accountability for professional practice and for continued professional growth and development through printed material or other sources and by attending meetings as appropriate
• Performs other duties as assigned and as needs arise

• Adequate hearing to perform job duties in person and over the telephone. Able to use stethoscope and respond to verbal questions

• Visual acuity adequate to perform job duties, including visual examination of patient and reading information printed sources and computer screen
• Requires frequent lifting and carrying items weighting up to 50 pounds unassisted, including assisting patients when required.
• Adequate physical ability including sufficient manual dexterity to perform the requisite healthcare service, including injections.
• Requires frequent bending, reaching, repetitive hand movements, standing, walking, squatting and sitting, with some heavy lifting, pushing and pulling exerted regularly throughout a regular work shift.
• Requires exposure to communicable diseases and/or bodily fluids

Experience & Education:

• RN, licensed in WY
• 1-3 years Surgery nursing experience
