Description

Job Summary

Operates transit vehicles and/or buses to provide public transportation; helps plan, organize and schedule deviated fixed route/para-transit services; fuels and cleans vehicles; maintains records and performs other support functions and related work as required. The work for this position is performed under the general direction and supervision of the Transit Director and Transit Dispatch but some leeway is granted for the exercise of independent judgment and initiative.


Duties and Responsibilities

  • Maintains and supports a positive, collaborative culture within the City organization as a whole, fully embracing the cultural and values statements espoused by the City.
  • Operates small, medium, and large duty public transit bus for a fixed, deviated fixed, or demand/response route on a predetermined schedule efficiently and safely.
  • Collects monies, tickets, passes, and transfers and maintains records; accommodates and assists in the loading, securing, and unloading of special needs and/or wheelchair-bound passengers. 
  • Cleans buses and conducts pre-trip and post-trip inspections of the vehicle and equipment.
  • Fuels buses, conducts minor preventive maintenance and inspections, and reports findings and problems; monitors and adjusts schedules for special events, tours, and community functions.
  • Answers telephone calls and responds to public inquiries/requests for operational information/services.
  • Attends meetings, conferences, and workshops as requested and authorized.
  • Handles fare boxes monies, keys, and safe/vault.
  • Monitors safety of equipment, road, and passengers at all times and takes any necessary action to keep riders and the public out of harm’s way.
  • Records mileage on log sheet, records ridership on daily sheets, and reports problems with vehicles and equipment.
  • Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with citizens and co-workers.
  • Other duties and responsibilities as required.


Supervisor Duties

This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

Qualifications


Transit Driver I

  • Requires High School Diploma, General Educational Development (GED) Certificate, or education and experience equivalent to the proficiency standards of a High School Diploma.
  • A valid Colorado Class B Commercial Drivers' License with a “P2 –Passenger Endorsement.
  • Requires a safe driving record.
  • Requires a current US Department of Transportation (DOT) Medical Card.
  • Requires current First Aid and CPR certification or the ability to possess same within 90 days of hire date.
  • Requires successful completion of the City’s transit driver’s training program.
  • Minimum 21 years of age.
  • Good knowledge of small and medium bus operation and maintenance.
  • Good knowledge of bus routes and procedures for route variance.
  • Basic knowledge of standard first aid practices and procedures.
  • Able to obtain the following ICS Certification: IS100.

Transit Driver II

  • Requires High School Diploma, General Educational Development (GED) Certificate, or education and experience equivalent to the proficiency standards of a High School Diploma.
  • A valid Colorado Class B Commercial Drivers' License with a “P2 –Passenger Endorsement.
  • Requires a minimum of three (3) years’ bus driving experience.
  • Requires a safe driving record.
  • Requires a current US Department of Transportation (DOT) Medical Card.
  • Requires current First Aid and CPR certification or the ability to possess same within 90 days of hire date.
  • Requires successful completion of the City’s transit driver’s training program.
  • Minimum 21 years of age.
  • Good knowledge of small and medium bus operation and maintenance.
  • Good knowledge of bus routes and procedures for route variance.
  • Basic knowledge of standard first aid practices and procedures.

Required Capabilities

  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

  • Ability to proficiently read, speak, and understand English. Proficiency in non-English languages is highly valued.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
  • Demonstrated strong verbal and written communication skills, analytical skills, statistical and mathematical abilities and interpersonal skills. Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating maintenance instructions and procedure manuals. Ability to write complex reports and distill information for many audiences.
  • This position requires close, distance and peripheral vision.
  • Ability to hear an average conversational voice in a quiet room, using one or both ears, at a distance of six (6) feet. Ability to hear sounds and signals indicating work and safety necessities.
  • This position requires standing, walking and sitting for periods of time. Utilization of hands and fingers to operate office computer keyboard and equipment required. Must be able to reach with hands and arms, and stoop, kneel or crouch if needed.
  • Must be able to lift up to thirty (30) pounds as needed and frequently lift up to ten (10) pounds.  
  • This position requires effective proficiency in the use of computer software and applications, office equipment, and professional telephone use. The ability to adequately type quickly with few to no errors is also very important. This position will often require multi-tasking in the use of computer, phone, and office equipment while interacting with clients. Candidates for this position may be required to take and pass technology proficiency assessments prior to employment.
Salary Description
$18.84 - $29.81 per hour depending on experience
