Pay Range: $60,000 to $70,000 depending on experience

We are looking for a Senior Accountant who brings financial expertise, sound judgment, attention to detail, and a collaborative spirit to help ensure our organization remains financially strong and accountable. This is an opportunity for an experienced accounting professional to play a key role in our financial operations while partnering with leaders across the agency.

What You’ll Do

As our Senior Accountant, you will be a key partner in keeping the agency's financial operations accurate, timely, compliant, and forward-looking. You will help connect the numbers to the bigger picture by working closely with Finance, Program Directors, and senior leadership.

You will:

Lead the monthly financial close.
Coordinate and complete monthly, quarterly, and annual closing activities, ensuring financial information is accurate, complete, and delivered on time.

Own the financial reporting process.
Coordinate agency financial reporting, including the general ledger, income statement, balance sheet, statement of cash flows, budgets, cost allocation plans, and funding-source reports.

Turn numbers into insight.
Prepare monthly financial statements and conduct meaningful budget-to-actual variance analysis, identifying trends, concerns, and opportunities that can help leadership make informed decisions.

Keep the agency financially compliant.
Ensure accounting practices and financial reporting align with agency policies, GAAP, FASB, OMB requirements, grant and contract requirements, and applicable state and local regulations.

Strengthen financial operations.
Oversee or perform key finance functions including payroll, accounts payable, accounts receivable, cash receipts, general ledger, budgeting, cash management, cost allocation, and compliance activities.

Manage cash with confidence.
Direct cash management activities, including cash-flow projections, bank reconciliations, fund transfers, and monitoring of organizational expenditures.

Partner with program leadership.
Work closely with Program Directors and management to develop budgets, amendments, forecasts, and financial strategies while helping leaders understand and manage their financial performance.

Support grants and funding.
Review and prepare reimbursement packages and grant-related financial reports, monitor funding requirements, investigate disallowances, and help ensure funds are collected accurately and on time.

Prepare for audits and accountability reviews.
Coordinate financial documentation and compliance requirements for internal and external audits and help ensure supporting schedules and records are complete and accurate.

Protect the integrity of our financial systems.
Monitor internal controls, identify potential weaknesses, resolve accounting issues, and promptly escalate concerns to the VP of Finance and appropriate senior leadership.

Lead through collaboration.
Review work completed by contracted finance staff, provide guidance and training as needed, and ensure critical deliverables are completed accurately and on schedule.

We are seeking a strong technical accountant who is:

• Experienced in financial reporting, month-end close, reconciliations, budgeting, and analysis
• Highly organized and comfortable managing multiple deadlines and priorities
• Knowledgeable about GAAP, internal controls, grant and contract compliance, and nonprofit financial operations
• Analytical and detail-oriented, with the ability to identify trends, discrepancies, and potential risks
• A clear and confident communicator who can build strong partnerships across departments
• Comfortable working independently while also being a collaborative member of the Finance team
• Proactive in identifying challenges and developing solutions

Education/Experience:

Bachelor's degree (BA or BS) from an accredited college or university in Accounting, Finance, or a related field is preferred, along with three to five years of directly related experience — ideally within a non-profit environment — or an equivalent combination of post-graduate education and experience. Hands-on professional accounting experience with cost allocation and grant compliance is required.

Language Ability:

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents. Ability to respond effectively to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community. Ability to write speeches and articles for publication that conform to prescribed style and format.

Math Ability:

Ability to apply advanced mathematical concepts such as exponents, logarithms, quadratic equations, and permutations. Ability to apply mathematical operations to tasks such as frequency distribution and the determination of test reliability, validity, and analysis.

Reasoning Ability: 

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions, and to independently complete the full closing cycle. Ability to interpret a wide variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and to work with several abstract and concrete variables.

Computer Skills: 

To perform this job successfully, an individual should have working knowledge of word processing software, strong proficiency in Excel spreadsheet software, and proficiency in financial/accounting software
