Description

Position Summary

The Electrical Controls Engineer is responsible for the design, development, programming, testing, and support of batch control systems for Mixer Systems. This position develops and maintains PLC and HMI applications, electrical schematics, control panel designs, and related documentation to ensure reliable and efficient operation of company products.


The Electrical Controls Engineer works closely with Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing, Service, Sales, and customers throughout the design, manufacturing, startup, and commissioning process. This position also provides technical support for existing equipment and identifies opportunities to improve control system functionality, reliability, and standardization.



Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The essential functions include, but are not limited to the following: 

  • Design, develop, program, test, and maintain industrial control systems for batching, mixing, and material handling equipment.
  • Develop new and modify existing PLC programs using Allen-Bradley Logix 500 and Studio 5000 programming software.
  • Develop and modify HMI applications.
  • Design electrical control systems, including control panel layouts, electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and bills of materials.
  • Select and specify electrical and controls components, including PLCs, HMIs, VFDs, motor controls and sensors.
  • Perform system testing, I/O verification, functional testing, and validation prior to equipment shipment.
  • Support equipment startup and commissioning remotely and at customer locations as needed.
  • Troubleshoot electrical, PLC, HMI, communication, and controls-related issues on new and existing equipment.
  • Analyze system performance and identify improvements.
  • Provide technical support to customers, Service, Manufacturing, and other internal departments.
  • Review customer specifications and project requirements to determine appropriate controls solutions.
  • Coordinate electrical and controls requirements with Mechanical Engineering and other project stakeholders.
  • Maintain accurate electrical drawings, programs, bills of materials, and engineering documentation.
  • Ensure programming and electrical design changes are properly documented.
  • Develop and maintain standardized PLC logic, HMI screens, electrical designs, and controls practices where appropriate.
  • Provide technical guidance and support to electrical assembly personnel during panel building.
  • Assist with customer and employee training related to batch control operation.
  • Manage multiple projects and priorities while meeting established project schedules and deadlines.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.


Requirements

Minimum Qualifications

  • Associate degrees in Electrical Engineering Technology, Automation Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related discipline; equivalent education and directly related experience may be considered.
  • Minimum of three years of experience designing, programming, commissioning, and troubleshooting industrial control systems.
  • Demonstrated experience developing and modifying PLC programs, including programming applications from initial development through implementation.
  • Two or more years of experience with Allen-Bradley Logix 500 and Studio 5000 PLC programming software.
  • Experience developing and modifying HMI applications using Allen-Bradley FactoryTalk View Studio or comparable HMI software.
  • Experience designing electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, control panel layouts, and bills of materials.
  • Working knowledge of VFDs, motor controls, sensors, instrumentation, industrial Ethernet networks, and related automation components.
  • Strong electrical and controls troubleshooting skills with the ability to identify root causes and develop effective solutions.
  • Strong organizational and project management skills.
  • Ability to communicate technical information effectively with customers, vendors, employees, and cross-functional teams.
  • Ability and willingness to travel to customer locations as needed for startup, commissioning, troubleshooting, and technical support.
  • English proficiency, both verbal and written, to effectively communicate with customers, vendors, and employees.  

Preferred Qualifications

  • BSEE, Electrical Engineering Technology, Automation Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related discipline; equivalent education and directly related experience may be considered.
  • Experience with batching, mixing, material handling, or similar industrial process equipment.
  • Experience programming and commissioning complete industrial control systems from initial development through customer startup.
  • Knowledge of industrial communication protocols and network configuration.
  • Experience creating, using, and modifying SQL databases and integrating database functionality with PLC/control systems.
  • Experience with CAD software used for electrical schematic and control panel design.
  • Previous electrical control panel build, wiring, or hands-on electrical assembly experience.
  • Experience providing customer training and technical support for industrial equipment.

  • Work is performed in a combination of office, manufacturing, laboratory/testing, and customer environments.
  • Regular interaction with industrial control systems, electrical panels, automated equipment, and batching systems.
  • Frequent use of computers, engineering software, PLC/HMI interfaces, electrical test equipment, and diagnostic tools.
  • Exposure to moving mechanical equipment, electrical systems, dust, noise, vibration, and varying indoor and outdoor environmental conditions.
  • Required to wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) and comply with all company and customer safety policies while working in manufacturing facilities and customer job sites.
  • May occasionally work outside normal business hours to support equipment startup, customer schedules, or urgent technical issues.

  • Possess sufficient visual acuity to read electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, instrumentation, and computer screens.
  • Communicate effectively in person, by telephone, and through virtual meeting platforms with employees, customers, suppliers, and vendors.
  • Safely work around energized electrical equipment and industrial machinery while following established safety procedures.

  • Ability to analyze and resolve complex electrical, controls, automation, and equipment-related problems.
  • Ability to develop, evaluate, and troubleshoot PLC logic, control sequences, HMI functionality, and electrical system designs.
  • Maintain a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail when programming, designing, testing, and documenting control systems.
  • Manage multiple projects, priorities, and deadlines.
  • Adapt to changing customer requirements, project priorities, technologies, and equipment configurations.
  • Communicate complex technical information clearly to individuals with varying levels of technical knowledge.
  • Effectively troubleshoot and make decisions in time-sensitive situations during equipment startup, commissioning, and customer support.
  • Work independently while recognizing when additional technical input, collaboration, or escalation is appropriate.
