Job Description - Director of Philanthropy

The Job
The Director of Philanthropy is an experienced Development professional who reports to the Executive Director and works closely with the Executive Director, Staff, the CRC Board and Lay Leaders to advance our mission by ensuring our financial resources. The Director of Philanthropy is responsible for the full range of CRC's fundraising: the Annual Financial Commitment (AFC), the Endowment campaign, general contributions throughout the year, planned and legacy giving, and grants. As a senior leader in the organization, the Director of Philanthropy serves in a management role with decision-making authority, supervises staff, and provides leadership to others in the organization.
Responsibilities
Annual Financial Commitment Campaign and Membership
Manage all aspects of the Annual Financial Commitment (AFC) campaign (the annual process of renewing memberships in the organization) including:
- Plan and implement the AFC strategy and processes each year, analyzing and recommending strategies for annual increases and collections
- Ensure that email, mailed collateral and phone calls to members are made and payments are received and acknowledged personally and promptly
- Maintain accurate data in Salesforce. Create and produce reports for various constituencies
- Supervise the Membership staff personnel; new member recruitment, engagement and retention
- Engage and manage any outsourced resources hired for this effort
Endowment
Implement the endowment campaign with support and direction from the Endowment Committee, CRC Board and the Executive Director. Provide leadership and insight for the campaign. May engage or work with consultants as needed.
- Support Relationship Managers including Rabbis, Executive Director and Lay Leaders with providing materials and resources, following up on assignments and subsequent communication with donors as needed/requested for solicitation
- Manage and cultivate a portfolio of donors
- Work with an Endowment Committee to plan and execute strategy
- Build, manage and steward CRC's legacy giving program, and maintain the relationships that sustain it over decades.
- Conduct donor research and prepare briefs as needed
- Document progress in relationships, solicitations and gifts
- Prepare reports for Committee, CRC Board and CRC Executive Director
- Manage the campaign budget
- Plan and implement donor cultivation and recognition events
General Contributions
Oversee the year-round giving that sits outside the AFC and the endowment campaigns, ensuring every gift is solicited, recorded, acknowledged and stewarded.
- Plan and implement fundraising campaigns including the High Holiday giving appeal (including messaging, timing, solicitation, acknowledgement, and follow-up)
- Manage and process tribute and memorial gifts, acknowledge donors, and notify the honoree or the family of the person being remembered
- Solicit and steward general and unrestricted contributions throughout the year
- Track results by appeal and report on performance year over year
Grants
Develop and manage CRC's grant funding, from identifying prospects through reporting on awards.
- Research and identify foundation, corporate and government funding opportunities aligned with CRC's mission and programs
- Write and submit letters of inquiry, proposals and supporting materials
- Maintain a grants calendar covering application deadlines, reporting dates and renewal cycles
- Track all grant data in Salesforce and ensure restricted funds are spent and reported in line with the agreement
- Prepare and submit interim and final reports, working with the Business Manager on financial reporting
Requirements and Skills
- Minimum 5 years nonprofit work experience with a minimum of 3 years in Philanthropy that includes experience in major gifts, grants, bequests, annual appeals and membership campaigns
- Experience organizing donor cultivation and recognition events
- Proficiency in Salesforce or donor software such as (DonorPerfect, Raiser's Edge, etc)
- Organized and efficient, able to manage multiple projects and concurrent campaigns
- Excellent verbal and written communications skills
- Must be an experienced people manager with the ability to work with multiple constituencies including board members, committees and lay leaders, executives, congregants, rabbis, and staff members
- Must be collaborative and able to think strategically and perform tactically
- Proficiency in Google Suite
- Keeps all information strictly confidential both internally and externally
- Thrives on making calls and meeting with potential donors and does so with compassion and understanding
- Knowledge of Jewish culture and traditions preferred
