Purpose:
The Compost & Recycling Specialist supports the development and implementation of Tlingit & Haida’s internal composting and recycling programs. This position provides hands-on support for composting and recycling operations, including management of Tlingit & Haida’s composting facility, operation and monitoring of composting equipment, collection and processing of organic materials, and sorting, preparation, and handling of recyclable materials.
The position also supports internal outreach and education, helping Tlingit & Haida staff and programs participate effectively in composting, recycling, and waste reduction activities. The Specialist assists with grant-funded projects, data collection, reporting, program development, and coordination with Tlingit & Haida staff, Tribal communities, contractors, and project partners as needed.
Essential Functions. An individual in this role must be able to perform the following functions with or without reasonable accommodation:
· Composting Operations: Support day-to-day operation and management of Tlingit & Haida’s composting facility, including operation and monitoring of composting equipment, management of organic materials, and maintenance of proper composting conditions.
· Recycling Operations: Support collection, sorting, preparation, storage, and shipment of recyclable materials generated through Tlingit & Haida programs and operations.
· Field Work and Facility Support: Conduct field work, site visits, material collection, equipment checks, and other activities necessary to support Tlingit & Haida’s composting and recycling programs.
· Program Implementation: Assist with implementation of composting and recycling projects, including developing work plans, tracking activities, collecting data, and supporting project schedules and deliverables.
· Outreach and Education: Conduct outreach and education with Tlingit & Haida staff, programs, and participating Tribal communities to promote composting, recycling, waste reduction, and proper material management.
· Program Support: Assist Tlingit & Haida programs and facilities with identifying composting and recycling needs, providing technical assistance, and implementing practical waste management solutions.
· Data Collection and Reporting: Collect and maintain operational data related to composting and recycling activities, including material quantities, participation, program outcomes, and information needed for grant reporting and program evaluation.
· Equipment and Supplies: Assist with identifying operational needs and maintaining appropriate supplies, tools, equipment, and materials needed to support composting and recycling activities.
· Coordination: Coordinate with Tlingit & Haida staff, contractors, and other project partners as needed to support composting and recycling activities.
· Grant Support: Assist with grant reporting, documentation, and other grant administration activities related to composting and recycling programs.
· Other Duties as Assigned.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities. A comprehensive set of capabilities required to perform job tasks effectively:
· Knowledge of composting, recycling, solid waste management, or related environmental programs.
· Knowledge of basic composting processes, material handling, and equipment operation.
· Ability to perform hands-on field work and support day-to-day operation of composting and recycling facilities.
· Ability to communicate effectively with Tlingit & Haida staff, contractors, and project partners.
· Strong written and verbal communication skills.
· Ability to organize and track multiple projects, activities, and deadlines.
· Ability to collect, maintain, and report program and operational data.
· Proficiency in Microsoft Office and other relevant software.
· Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
Minimum Qualifications (education, experience, skills):
· Associates degree in environmental science, natural sciences, environmental management, sustainability, solid waste management, or a closely related field OR an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience that demonstrates ability to successfully fulfill position functions.
· One (1) – Two (2) years of experience in composting, recycling, solid waste management, environmental programs, or a closely related field.
· Must be 21 years of age with an Alaska Driver’s license.
Preferred Qualifications (education, experience, skills):
· Bachelor’s degree in technical field, vocational education, or workforce development.
· Prior teaching, vocational instructional, or apprenticeship mentorship experience.
· Current state teaching credential or specialized industry instructor certification (e.g., AWS CWI, NCCER Instructor, OSHA 10/30 Trainer, CDL Examiner).
· Prior experience working within Native or Tribal organization frameworks.

· Some travel may be required on small aircraft or ferry.
· Certain positions at Tlingit and Haida may have exposure to certain hazardous materials or conditions. The supervisor will review these if applicable.
