What's the Role
The Maintenance Manager leads the Maintenance department at our Houston, TX facility, overseeing preventative and repair maintenance of machinery, building systems, and production equipment across Manufacturing, Distribution, and Packing Operations. This role is critical to keeping conveyors, bagging machines, automated packaging, and material handling equipment running safely and efficiently, directly supporting F&S's commitment to safe, uninterrupted food distribution. The ideal candidate brings hands-on experience across multiple maintenance trades — including hydraulics, plumbing, refrigeration, electrical, fabrication, and welding — along with working knowledge of Ammonia systems and local, state, and federal regulatory compliance. This person thrives in a continuous-improvement environment, balancing hands-on troubleshooting with team leadership and mentorship of junior technicians.
What You'll Own
- Manage the Maintenance team, including scheduling, training, performance evaluation, and hiring recommendations
- Oversee preventive and predictive maintenance schedules for mechanical equipment, including pumps, motors, compressors, and conveyors
- Troubleshoot and repair production and material handling equipment, including bagging, packaging, and distribution machinery
- Maintain and service building systems such as HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and refrigeration
- Ensure compliance with regulatory agencies (OSHA, DOT, CARB, AQMD, and others) and Ammonia system safety protocols
- Manage work orders, budgets, parts, and supply needs with accurate documentation and reporting
- Interpret blueprints, wiring diagrams, and technical specifications to guide repairs and installations
- Partner with the Operations team to support continuous improvement and mentor junior technicians
What You Bring
- Education — High school diploma or equivalent required; Associate's degree, vocational training, apprenticeship, or trades certification preferred
- Experience — 2+ years in a Maintenance Lead, Supervisor, or Managerial role, plus 3+ years as a Maintenance Technician or in related mechanical repair work
- Technical skill — 2+ years working with automated conveyor systems, motor controls, and electro/mechanical equipment; 1+ year reading blueprints and electrical schematics
- Certification / Compliance — Working knowledge of Ammonia systems and local, state, and federal regulatory requirements
- Technical skill — Proficiency with a Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) and Microsoft Office Suite
- Personal quality — Strong leadership and interpersonal skills, with the ability to train, coach, and develop technicians; bilingual (Spanish/English) preferred
- Personal quality — Experience working in a chilled food factory or related environment preferred
- Physical requirement — Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and work in a cold/damp environment for extended periods
Physical Demands
Work is primarily performed in a chilled environment or maintenance shop. Regularly required to stand, walk, squat, stoop, bend, reach, talk, and hear, and to use hands and fingers to handle, lift, feel, push, or pull objects. Exerts up to 50 lbs of force occasionally and up to 20 lbs of force frequently, with constant lifting/carrying of up to 10 lbs. Exposed to chilled or warm temperatures within the operation.
