The City of Greer is currently accepting applications for a Detention Officer I in our Police Department.
POSITION SUMMARY
The purpose of this position is to oversee the daily operations and personnel of the Detention Center, ensuring the efficient intake, booking, and provision of supplies to prisoners. Responsibilities include answering telephones and directing calls, assisting the public, visitors, and prisoners with inquiries or concerns, and monitoring all prisoner activities to maintain safety and compliance.
This position operates under general supervision and is expected to independently determine appropriate work methods, priorities, and sequences.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Primary
- Intakes and books prisoners into the facility, including completing required documentation, obtaining photographs and fingerprints, and collecting or updating biographical information.
- Serves as desk officer by greeting the public, answering telephones, taking messages, routing calls, assisting with warrant inquiries, and preparing written reports.
- Reviews, enters, updates, and maintains warrants.
- Monitors the jail’s fire alarm system and responds appropriately to alerts.
- Inputs information into the records management system, including booking details, citations, and new, served, or unserved warrants.
- Fingerprints non-arrest citizens for employment or other authorized purposes and compiles statistical data for management as requested.
- Receives, reviews, prepares, and submits a variety of reports and documents, such as booking sheets, medical forms, fingerprint cards, statements, commitment papers, warrants, citations, dockets, logs, lists, and general correspondence.
- Promotes and maintains the safety and security of the inmate population.
- Provides escorts for arraignments.
- Consults and adheres to policy and procedure manuals, computer manuals, codes, laws, regulations, and reference materials.
- Operates equipment and machinery such as radios, copiers, cameras, washers and dryers, telephones, computers, alarm systems, and fax machines.
- Performs general administrative and office duties, including typing reports and correspondence, entering and retrieving data, copying and filing documents, and sending and receiving faxes.
- Ensures professionalism and exceptional customer service during all interactions and represents the City of Greer with integrity.
- Exhibits strong ethical standards and builds trust with coworkers, visitors, and the community.
- Adheres to the Employee Handbook and all relevant policies and procedures.
- Maintains regular and reliable attendance.

EDUCATION, SKILLS, AND EXPERIENCE
Minimum
- High school diploma or GED equivalent.
