Description

The Director of Internal and External Reporting provides strategic and operational leadership for the organization’s financial reporting, analysis, accounts payable, accounts receivable, forecasting, and financial information management functions. This role ensures financial activity is accurate, timely, and effectively translated into meaningful information for executive leadership, program teams, the Board, auditors, funders, and other stakeholders.


The Director serves as a key bridge between financial operations and management decision-making, ensuring that the organization’s accounting activity, financial reporting, and analysis are coordinated, reliable, and aligned with organizational priorities.

Requirements

Key Responsibilities

Financial Reporting & Analysis 

  • Lead timely and standardized monthly financial reporting for the organization, departments, programs, and grants.
  • Establish reporting standards, calendars, formats, and expectations to ensure consistency and accountability.
  • Oversee budget-to-actual reporting, variance and trend analysis, dashboards, and key financial performance indicators.
  • Ensure financial information provided to executives, program leadership, the Board, funders, governmental agencies, auditors, and other stakeholders is accurate, clear, and actionable.

Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable & Cash Management 

  • Provide leadership and oversight of Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivable, including invoicing, payments, billing, cash receipts, deposits, reconciliations, collections, and aging activity.
  • Ensure transactions are processed accurately and timely in accordance with purchasing, contracting, grant, and organizational requirements.
  • Monitor AP and AR activity for aging, unusual, duplicate, or potentially inappropriate transactions and coordinate resolution with appropriate teams.
  • Maintain appropriate internal controls and segregation of duties over payments, cash receipts, banking activity, and receivable adjustments.

Financial Planning, Forecasting & Grant Reporting

  • Lead financial forecasting and performance analysis in partnership with the CFO and Director of Financial Planning, Grant Management & Procurement.
  • Integrate accounting, grant, program, and operational information into forecasts, financial models, and scenario analyses.
  • Oversee consistent grant-level budget-to-actual reporting and partner with Grant Financial Managers to monitor spending, allocations, funding trends, and financial risks.
  • Identify significant financial trends, variances, and emerging issues and provide recommendations to leadership.

Accounting, Close & Audit

  • Coordinate with the Senior Accountant and financial operations staff to ensure timely monthly and year-end close processes.
  • Review significant fluctuations, unusual activity, and accounting issues that may affect management or external reporting.
  • Ensure appropriate accounting adjustments and financial information are incorporated into reporting.
  • Coordinate financial schedules, documentation, and responses for the annual audit and other external reviews.

Financial Data & Analytics

  • Lead the development of reporting datasets, dashboards, analytical tools, and other financial information resources.
  • Improve the efficiency, automation, accessibility, and reliability of financial reporting.
  • Identify data quality issues and work with Finance and operational teams to resolve them.
  • Use financial and operational data to identify trends, opportunities, risks, and areas requiring management intervention.

Leadership & Collaboration

  • Provide leadership to Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, reporting, and analytics functions.
  • Establish clear expectations for quality, timeliness, internal controls, and accountability.
  • Collaborate closely with Grant Management, Procurement, Compliance, HR, and program leadership.
  • Provide the CFO and executive leadership with objective financial analysis and recommendations.
  • Promote transparency, collaboration, and a shared understanding of financial performance across the organization.

Required Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, business administration, economics, public administration, or a related field required.
  • Master's degree, CPA, CGFM, or other relevant professional credential preferred.

Experience

  • Minimum of 7 years of progressively responsible experience in accounting, financial reporting, FP&A, financial analysis, or related financial management.
  • Demonstrated experience with financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, variance analysis, and financial modeling.
  • Experience with grant-funded or government-funded organizations strongly preferred.
  • Experience supporting external audits and financial reporting requirements.
  • Experience leading and developing financial staff.
  • Experience with financial systems, data analytics, and reporting tools.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Advanced financial analysis, forecasting, budget-to-actual analysis, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to translate complex financial information into clear, actionable recommendations.
  • Strong Excel and financial modeling skills with experience working with complex financial datasets.
  • Experience with ERP/accounting systems; Abila MIP experience preferred.
  • Ability to develop effective dashboards and financial reporting tools.
  • Strong written, verbal, organizational, and project management skills.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with executives, program leadership, auditors, and cross-functional teams.
  • High degree of integrity, discretion, and professional judgment.

LICENSES:

  • Valid State of Michigan Driver's License – Position may require some field work.
