Makwa Global, a Native American Tribal entity, providing services and solutions to federal government clients, is seeking an experienced and strategic AI-Focused Controller to oversee our accounting operations while spearheading the integration of advanced AI tools to enhance efficiency, compliance, and decision-making. The ideal candidate brings deep knowledge of government contracting financial regulations (e.g., FAR, DFARS, CAS), combined with a progressive mindset around automation, analytics, and artificial intelligence.
Key Responsibilities:
- Accounting Oversight:
- Manage and oversee all day-to-day accounting operations, including general ledger, accounts payable/receivable, payroll, cash management, reconciliations and month-end close and reporting.
o Establish and maintain appropriate financial controls, accounting policies, procedures, and documentation.
o Coordinate information and documentation required for annual financial audits, incurred cost submissions, benefits audits, tax filings, government contracting requirements, and other compliance activities.
o Ensure compliance with GAAP, Cost Accounting Standards (CAS), and Federal Acquisition Regulations (FAR/DFARS).
o Maintain and optimize DCAA-compliant accounting systems.
- AI & Automation Integration:
- Lead the evaluation, selection, and implementation of AI and machine learning tools for financial operations, such as predictive forecasting, anomaly detection, and intelligent automation of workflows.
- Collaborate with IT to ensure seamless integration of AI tools with ERP and accounting systems (e.g., Unanet, Paylocity etc.).
- Identify and automate routine and repetitive accounting tasks to reduce manual effort and improve accuracy.
- Establish appropriate controls, approval workflows, documentation, access restrictions, and segregation of duties for automated and AI-assisted financial processes. Monitor for accuracy, reliability, security, compliance, and effectiveness.
- Financial Strategy & Compliance:
- Support annual budgeting, forecasting, and strategic financial planning
- Prepare or review indirect rate structures and ensure timely submission of incurred cost submissions (ICS).
- Interface with external auditors, government agencies, and internal stakeholders during financial reviews and audits.
- Team Leadership:
- Lead and mentor a small team of finance professionals and analysts.
- Promote a culture of innovation and continuous improvement through the use of emerging technologies.
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or related field required.
- CPA or MBA strongly preferred.
- 8+ years of progressively responsible experience in accounting/financial management within a government contracting environment.
- Experience with 8(a) multiple entities, Small Business regulations, and OCONUS work
- In-depth knowledge of GAAP, FAR, DFARS, and CAS requirements.
- Experience with DCAA audits and compliance reporting.
- Hands-on experience with Unanet (strongly preferred) or other accounting/ERP systems used in federal contracting. Ability to be Unanet administrator.
- Experience with M&A due diligence, accounting integration
- Proven experience identifying and implementing AI or automation tools in a financial setting.
