Director of Operations & Sales
We are seeking a dynamic, results-driven Director of Operations & Sales to support the overall success of our Courtyard by Marriott. This is a hands-on leadership role for someone who can effectively manage hotel operations while actively driving sales, revenue, and local business development.
The ideal candidate understands that strong hotel performance requires both operational excellence and consistent sales activity. This individual will work closely with the General Manager to oversee daily operations, develop the hotel team, maintain Marriott brand standards, and grow revenue through corporate, group, meeting, sports, and local business opportunities.
Key Responsibilities
Hotel Operations
- Oversee daily hotel operations, with a strong focus on Front Office, guest services, Bistro/Food & Beverage, and overall property execution.
- Ensure the hotel consistently meets Courtyard by Marriott brand standards and QA expectations.
- Maintain a strong working knowledge of Courtyard Bistro operations, including breakfast and evening service, Starbucks standards, inventory, ordering, food cost, sanitation, and service standards.
- Monitor guest satisfaction and respond to guest concerns with appropriate service recovery.
- Ensure Front Desk procedures, guest folios, open balances, Market operations, cash handling, and daily checklists are completed accurately.
- Recruit, train, coach, schedule, and develop hotel associates.
- Manage labor and departmental expenses while maintaining appropriate service levels.
- Assist the General Manager with budgeting, forecasting, purchasing, expense control, operational reporting, and hotel financial performance.
- Maintain a QA-ready hotel through regular inspections, training, follow-up, and accountability.
- Serve as Manager on Duty and provide leadership in the General Manager's absence.
Sales & Business Development
- Actively solicit and develop new business for the hotel rather than relying solely on inbound leads.
- Develop relationships with local corporations, healthcare organizations, universities, government agencies, construction companies, oil and gas businesses, sports organizations, schools, and other demand generators.
- Prospect for corporate negotiated accounts, group business, sports teams, meetings, training events, and social groups.
- Conduct sales calls, outside sales visits, site tours, networking, and community outreach.
- Respond to leads and RFPs promptly and professionally.
- Prepare proposals, negotiate rates, follow up on opportunities, and assist with group contracts.
- Maintain consistent follow-up with prospective and existing clients.
- Develop and maintain relationships with key accounts to encourage repeat business.
- Monitor upcoming events and local demand generators to identify new sales opportunities.
- Partner with the General Manager on hotel pricing, need dates, promotions, and revenue strategies.
- Track sales activity, leads, definite business, lost business, account production, and upcoming opportunities.
- Assist with group blocks, rooming lists, cutoff dates, meeting requirements, and communication between clients and hotel operations.
- Conduct post-event follow-up to strengthen relationships and generate repeat business.
- Identify opportunities to increase rooms revenue, meeting-room revenue, Bistro/F&B revenue, and overall hotel profitability.
Qualifications
- Previous hotel leadership experience in operations, sales, or a combination of both.
- Marriott or Courtyard by Marriott experience strongly preferred.
- Demonstrated experience in hotel sales, account development, prospecting, group sales, and business development.
- Strong understanding of Front Office and hotel operational procedures.
- Working knowledge of Courtyard Bistro/Food & Beverage operations.
- Experience with hotel budgeting, forecasting, labor management, and expense controls.
- Understanding of hotel performance metrics, including occupancy, ADR, RevPAR, revenue, labor, and guest satisfaction.
- Strong sales, negotiation, networking, and relationship-building skills.
- Ability to develop new accounts and convert leads into booked business.
- Strong leadership and team-development skills.
- Excellent communication, organization, follow-through, and problem-solving abilities.
- Ability to balance operational responsibilities with an active sales schedule.
- Flexible availability based on hotel business needs.
The Person We Are Looking For
We need someone who can wear both hats.
This person should be comfortable walking the hotel in the morning to ensure operations and Bistro standards are on point, coaching the Front Desk team, reviewing hotel performance, and then transitioning into sales calls, prospecting, client meetings, site tours, RFPs, and account follow-up.
This is not strictly an operations position, and it is not strictly a sales position. We are looking for a hotel leader who understands how excellent operations support sales—and how strong sales drive the hotel's overall performance.
The successful candidate will be proactive, accountable, sales-minded, operationally strong, and focused on helping the hotel grow.
