We are seeking a reliable, organized, and patient-focused Urgent Care Medical Assistant to join our clinical team at Epic Pain Management's Babcock location in San Antonio. This position requires flexible availability, including weekends. Candidates must be able and willing to work Saturdays and/or Sundays based on the assigned schedule, patient volume, staffing needs, and operational requirements. The Urgent Care Medical Assistant is responsible for providing direct clinical and administrative support to physicians, Nurse Practitioners, Physician Assistants, and other authorized healthcare professionals within Epic Pain Management's Urgent Care services. This position plays an essential role in maintaining efficient patient flow, preparing patients for evaluation, obtaining and documenting clinical information, assisting with diagnostic testing and procedures, maintaining examination rooms, and supporting providers throughout the patient encounter.

About the Role
The Urgent Care Medical Assistant serves as a primary clinical point of contact after patient check-in.Responsibilities include rooming patients, obtaining vital signs, documenting chief complaints and medical history, reviewing medications and allergies, preparing patients for provider evaluation, assisting with provider-ordered testing and treatments, and ensuring applicable clinical documentation is accurate and complete.The position may assist with point-of-care testing, specimen collection, injections, medication administration, wound care, splinting, electrocardiograms (EKGs), and other Urgent Care services when appropriately trained, competent, authorized, and supported by applicable provider orders and Company procedures.The Urgent Care Medical Assistant is responsible for promptly communicating abnormal vital signs, significant patient-reported symptoms, changes in patient condition, or other clinical concerns to the appropriate licensed healthcare professional.The Medical Assistant does not independently diagnose medical conditions, interpret diagnostic results, prescribe medications, determine treatment plans, or provide medical advice.
Responsibilities
Patient Intake & Clinical Support
- Greet and prepare Urgent Care patients for evaluation in a professional, timely, and compassionate manner
- Verify patient identity using established patient identification procedures
- Escort and room patients efficiently following completion of front desk check-in
- Obtain and accurately document the patient's chief complaint and reason for the visit
- Obtain and document applicable medical, surgical, medication, allergy, and social history according to established workflows
- Review and update medication and allergy information within the Electronic Medical Record (EMR)
- Obtain and accurately document vital signs, including blood pressure, pulse, respiratory rate, temperature, oxygen saturation, weight, and other applicable measurements
- Immediately communicate abnormal vital signs or significant clinical concerns to the appropriate licensed provider
- Observe patients for apparent changes in condition and promptly communicate concerns to the clinical team
- Prepare the patient and examination room for provider evaluation
- Ensure required clinical information is available to the provider before or during the patient encounter
- Maintain efficient patient flow and communicate delays or workflow barriers to the Urgent Care Clinical Supervisor or appropriate personnel
Testing, Treatments & Procedures
- Assist physicians, Nurse Practitioners, Physician Assistants, nurses, and other authorized clinical professionals during patient examinations
- Prepare equipment and supplies for examinations, treatments, and office-based procedures
- Assist with provider-ordered procedures within the Medical Assistant's training, competency, certification, and authorized responsibilities
- Assist with collection, labeling, and appropriate handling of specimens
- Perform or assist with authorized point-of-care testing when appropriately trained and competent
- Document testing information accurately and route results for appropriate provider review
- Assist with EKG acquisition when ordered and when trained and competent
- Assist with respiratory or infectious-disease testing according to established procedures
- Assist with urinalysis, pregnancy testing, glucose testing, or other approved point-of-care testing when ordered
- Prepare injections and medications for administration when trained, competent, authorized, and supported by an appropriate provider order
- Administer applicable IM or subcutaneous medications within authorized responsibilities and Company procedures
- Assist with basic wound care and dressing changes
- Assist with splinting, bracing, or other applicable orthopedic-support workflows when trained and competent
- Assist providers with minor procedures and other Urgent Care treatments
- Maintain appropriate aseptic technique and infection-prevention practices
Documentation & EMR
- Maintain accurate, complete, objective, and timely clinical documentation
- Document patient communications and clinical information accurately within the Electronic Medical Record
- Ensure patient records reflect information actually obtained, observed, performed, or appropriately directed
- Maintain patient confidentiality and safeguard Protected Health Information (PHI)
- Comply with HIPAA and Company privacy and confidentiality requirements
- Route questions requiring medical judgment or advice to the appropriate licensed clinical professional
Clinic Operations
- Maintain examination rooms in a clean, organized, safe, and patient-ready condition
- Clean and disinfect examination rooms and patient-contact surfaces between patients
- Restock examination rooms and assigned clinical areas as necessary
- Monitor clinical supply levels and communicate replenishment needs
- Monitor applicable expiration dates and remove expired or compromised supplies
- Monitor sharps containers and follow appropriate sharps and biohazard disposal procedures
- Follow infection prevention, standard precautions, bloodborne pathogen, PPE, sharps safety, and exposure-control procedures
- Support efficient room turnover and patient flow
- Report damaged, malfunctioning, missing, or unsafe equipment promptly
Teamwork & Patient Care
- Collaborate with the Urgent Care Clinical Supervisor regarding workflow, patient volume, room assignments, and operational needs
- Work collaboratively with physicians, Nurse Practitioners, Physician Assistants, nurses, Medical Assistants, Front Desk personnel, X-Ray personnel, and other departments
- Communicate delays, patient concerns, equipment issues, supply shortages, or other operational barriers promptly
- Assist with maintaining efficient patient flow during periods of increased patient volume
- Follow established escalation procedures when a patient's condition requires immediate licensed clinical evaluation
- Demonstrate compassion, patience, professionalism, and respect during patient interactions
- Participate in required clinical training and competency assessments
- Maintain required certifications and clinical competencies
- Provide support at other Epic Pain Management locations or clinical areas when assigned according to organizational needs
- Maintain regular and reliable attendance, punctuality, professionalism, accountability, and teamwork
- Perform other job-related duties and responsibilities as assigned by management
Qualifications
- High school diploma or General Education Diploma (GED) required
- Completion of an accredited or recognized Medical Assistant training program required
- Current Certified Medical Assistant (CMA), Registered Medical Assistant (RMA), or equivalent recognized Medical Assistant certification required
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required or must be obtained within the timeframe established by Epic Pain Management
- Previous Medical Assistant or comparable outpatient clinical experience preferred
- Urgent Care experience strongly preferred
- Working knowledge of medical terminology
- Experience with patient intake, rooming, vital signs, and clinical documentation
- Ability to perform point-of-care testing and specimen collection when appropriately trained and competent
- Ability to assist with EKG acquisition when trained and competent
- Ability to prepare and administer applicable injections or medications when appropriately trained, competent, authorized, and ordered
- Ability to assist with wound care, splinting, and other applicable Urgent Care procedures when trained and competent
- Proficient with Electronic Medical Record (EMR) systems
- Athenahealth/AthenaOne experience preferred
- Strong communication, organization, time-management, and multitasking skills
- Excellent attention to detail and documentation accuracy
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, high-volume clinical environment
- Ability to maintain patient confidentiality and comply with HIPAA requirements
- Bilingual in English and Spanish preferred

- Must be available to work Saturdays and/or Sundays as assigned based on scheduling and operational needs
- Must be able to work scheduled shifts during Urgent Care operating hours of 8:00 AM–10:00 PM
- Schedule consists of three (3) scheduled workdays and four (4) days off, subject to staffing and operational needs
