Position Overview 

As a Network Engineer I at FiberLight, you will configure and maintain Layer 2 and Layer 3 network services, keep network databases and inventory records up to date, and participate in scheduled overnight maintenance windows. This role works within the Engineering department and provides direct support to the provisioning team to help ensure accurate, on-time service delivery. 

Essential Job Functions 

Layer 2 and Layer 3 Configuration 

• Configure Layer 2 services including Ethernet, MPLS, and EVPL circuits on Cisco and Juniper platforms. 
• Configure and verify Layer 3 services including BGP and ISIS routing for customer-facing and backbone services. 
• Follow design specifications and process documentation when configuring network devices. 
• Troubleshoot Layer 2 and Layer 3 configuration issues and escalate complex problems to senior engineers. 
• Coordinate test and turn-up activities with the NOC and customers as required. 

Database and Records Management 

• Update and maintain circuit records in network management and inventory systems such as Carma, 3GIS, SiteTracker, and SolarWinds to reflect current network configurations. 
• Verify that circuit builds match design documentation and update records to reflect the correct state. 
• Process circuit disconnect and decommission updates, including marking circuits as Pending Decommission and removing decommissioned devices from monitoring systems. 
• Identify and resolve discrepancies between network records and actual device configurations. 
• Work with project managers, design teams, and provisioning engineers to keep records accurate throughout the service lifecycle. 

Maintenance Windows 

• Participate in overnight maintenance windows to implement network changes with minimal service impact. 
• Execute change procedures on routers, switches, and other network equipment following approved maintenance plans. 
• Coordinate with the NOC during maintenance activities and document outcomes after each window. 

Provisioning Support 

• Support the provisioning team with circuit activations, service migrations, and service turn-up tasks. 
• Serve as an escalation point for the NOC on circuit configuration and service issues. 
• Document configurations, procedures, and completed work clearly and consistently. 

•  3 to 7 years of experience in network engineering or telecommunications. 
• Hands-on experience configuring Layer 2 services, including Ethernet, MPLS, and EVPL. 
• Working knowledge of Layer 3 routing protocols, including BGP and ISIS. 
• Experience with Juniper and/or Cisco network equipment. 
• Experience using network management and inventory systems (such as Carma, 3GIS, SiteTracker, SolarWinds, or similar platforms). 
• Ability to work overnight maintenance windows as needed. 
• Associate's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field, or equivalent work experience. 

Other Skills and Abilities 

• Attention to detail when updating records and validating configurations. 
• Good troubleshooting and analytical skills. 
• Clear written and verbal communication skills. 
• Ability to work with cross-functional teams including project managers, design engineers, provisioning staff, and field technicians. 
• Basic scripting knowledge (Python or Ansible) for automation tasks is a plus. 
• Familiarity with DWDM platforms such as Ciena is a plus. 
• CCNA, JNCIA, or equivalent certifications are a plus.
