Position Summary:
Under direct supervision, the Washoe Liaison ensures the best interest for the Washoe Tribe and its members are being met with other governments and organizations. Develop and maintain outreach within the Lake Tahoe Basin, both California and Nevada. The Washoe Liaison represents the Washoe Tribe on boards, committees, and other organizations in the Lake Tahoe Basin. The successful candidate will be required to work and travel within the Lake Tahoe Basin. Maintains confidentiality of all privileged information.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
· Serves as liaison of the Washoe Tribe to boards, committees, and other organizations.
· Provides community outreach to educate the general public, boards, committees, and other organizations about the original inhabitants of the Lake Tahoe Basin.
· Assists with the design, development, implementation, and management for outreach, education, and support efforts as well as natural resources or environmental issues.
· Promotes the Washoe Tribal image and goals through public speaking engagements and local professional presentations.
· Provides weekly reports to the Tribal Administrator.
· Informs the Tribal Administrator when attention or attendance is required for matters in the Lake Tahoe Basin.
· Seeks out opportunities to connect on common ground and partnerships with the Lake Tahoe Basin organizations
· Have strong collaboration and communicating skills, networking, and be comfortable working in fast-paced environments.
· Participates in conferences, hearings, meetings, and other events where the Washoe Tribe needs to be represented.
· Works with tribal departments to assist, for example environmental for natural resources, Tribal Historic Preservation Office (THPO) for cultural resources and the liaison works with the Washoe Cultural Resources Advisory Committee (WCRAC) for advice and recommendations that need a consensus of an advisory body.
· Reviews and comments to planning documents on consultation with the Tribal Administrator.
· Develops fundraising events and promoting philanthropic opportunities in the Tahoe Basin and within the Washoe Tribe’s territory.
Public Relations of the Tahoe Basin to assist with economic development, promoting Tribal events, press releases, and to requests for interviews.
Knowledge, Abilities, Skills, and Certifications:
· Knowledge of traditional form of government and Washoe Tribal customs and traditions.
· Knowledge of applicable federal, state, county, and local laws, regulations, and requirements.
· Knowledge of the functions and structure of the Washoe Tribe.
· Ability to communicate effectively in the English language both verbally and in writing.
· Ability to establish and maintain professional relationships with individuals of varying social and cultural backgrounds and with co-workers at all levels.
· Ability to create and present effective speeches and presentations.
· Ability to make strong presentations and confidently answer questions truthfully and factually about the Washoe Tribe.
· Ability to establish and maintain professional relationships with individuals of varying social and cultural backgrounds and with co-workers at all levels and be sensitive to other people’s viewpoints.
· Ability to represent the Washoe Tribe in a professional manner, building respect and confidence.
· Ability to handle multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
· Knowledge of the Lake Tahoe Basin geography.
· Ability to effectively use social media to promote Washoe values, interests, and to advocate with the public and interested stakeholders.
Physical Demands:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly is required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk and hear. The employee is frequently required to walk; required to operate a motor vehicle; stand, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee will also be outdoors in varying environmental conditions. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
Work Environment:
Work is generally performed in an office setting with a moderate noise level. Attending meetings in person and virtually with varying noise levels.
The Washoe Tribe of Nevada & California requires a background check of each new hire for employment purposes. Therefore, all conditionally offered positions will be subject to the following:

- Obtain or possess a valid driver’s license for either the State of Nevada or California within 30 days
- Must be insurable under the Washoe Tribe’s driving policy
· Preference will be given to qualified Native Americans.
Minimum Qualifications:
· Bachelor's degree in Public Administration, Government, or Politics and Policy, and 5 years of experience working with a federally recognized tribe or a combination of education and experience.
