Gypsum Recreation Center is looking for a dependable and enthusiastic Fitness Instructor to lead safe, engaging, and motivating group fitness classes for participants of varying fitness levels. This position creates a positive and welcoming environment, provides appropriate modifications to support participant needs and abilities, and delivers high-quality instruction consistent with Mountain Recreation’s fitness programming and safety standards.

POSITION DETAILS
Job Title: Fitness Instructor
Location: Gypsum Recreation Center (Gypsum, CO)
Employment Type: Part-Time, Year-Round
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt (Overtime Eligible)
Schedule: Currently, classes are specifically scheduled on Wednesday evenings from 6:00–7:00 p.m. The schedule may expand to include additional evenings, weekends, and holidays based on programming needs. Flexibility in scheduling is required to successfully fulfill the responsibilities of this position.
Supervision Required: Works under the direct supervision of the Facility Coordinator
Supervision Exercised: None
Work Environment and Physical Requirements: Work schedule requires reliable attendance for short, scheduled shifts. The position requires consistent mental and visual attention while leading and monitoring participants. Physical demands include prolonged periods of indoor cycling, standing, walking, bending, demonstrating cycling techniques and movements, and occasional lifting or moving equipment. The position requires frequent use of voice for instruction and may involve periods of continuous physical activity and participant interaction.

Salary: $25.00-$35.00/hour; staff in this position are eligible for a $1/hour incentive for Spanish/English bilingual and can pass the language competency test.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
General Statement of Duties: Develop and lead safe, engaging, and inclusive fitness classes that promote strength, endurance, flexibility, and overall well-being. Support participants in achieving their personal fitness goals through proper exercise techniques, motivational coaching, and a positive, encouraging environment that makes fitness accessible and enjoyable for everyone.
Examples of Duties:
- Plan and lead group fitness classes that promote strength, endurance, flexibility, and overall wellness.
- Provide clear instruction and demonstrate proper exercise form, pacing, and techniques to ensure participant safety and understanding.
- Offer modifications, training tips, and guidance to accommodate varying fitness levels, abilities, and goals.
- Foster positive relationships with participants and create an inclusive, supportive, and motivating class environment.
- Communicate with staff regarding class schedules, facility use, and participant feedback.
- Maintain attendance records and any required program documentation.
- Set up, take down, and properly store equipment or training materials before and after classes.
- Monitor and address facility safety, cleanliness, and equipment condition during sessions.
- Support the inclusion of participants with diverse abilities and needs.
- Respond appropriately to accidents and incidents according to established procedures.
- Act as a mandatory reporter and comply with all reporting requirements.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

COMPETENCIES AND QUALIFICATIONS
Considerable knowledge of:
- Fitness principles and techniques, including proper form, pacing, endurance building, and injury prevention.
- Body mechanics, warm-up and cool-down routines, and safe exercise practices.
- Methods for adapting fitness instruction to various ages, abilities, and fitness levels.
- Current best practices in group fitness instruction, coaching, and wellness programming.
Skills and abilities:
- Proficient in utilizing a variety of fitness techniques, exercises, and class formats to meet the needs of diverse participants.
- Able to communicate effectively with participants of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds.
- Strong planning, organizational, leadership, and interpersonal skills.
- Maintains a positive, motivating, and encouraging demeanor while leading classes.
- Capable of physically performing the duties associated with leading fitness sessions.
- Works cooperatively with others and fosters positive, constructive relationships with staff and participants.
- Demonstrates competency in fitness instruction and effectively prepares and presents classes to a variety of audiences.
- Comfortable managing group dynamics, conflicts, and participant concerns while maintaining a safe and supportive environment.
- Able to respond appropriately to emergency situations, ensuring the safety and well-being of participants and staff.
Requirements:
Education and experience
- Minimum 18 years of age or older; AND
- Possess a high school diploma or equivalent
Certifications
- Certification in group fitness instruction, personal training, or a related exercise/fitness program (preferred)
- May require possession of or ability to obtain a valid First Aid/CPR certification within 30 days of hire.
