Commissioning Technician Apprentice
Description

Prior mechanical trade experience is not required. OMI will provide required training, including OSHA 10 and support for applicable gas licensing requirements.


The Commissioning Technician Apprentice works alongside experienced commissioning personnel to support the start-up, testing, inspection, troubleshooting, and commissioning of HVAC and mechanical systems installed by Oliver Mechanical Inc. (OMI). This position helps ensure equipment and systems are properly installed, operating as intended, and meet project requirements and OMI quality standards.


The role provides hands-on support with HVAC equipment, piping, controls, and related mechanical systems, including field installation, functional testing, quality inspections, documentation, and project closeout activities. The Commissioning Technician Apprentice may also support Construction and Service operations as needed.

Requirements
  • Assist with the start-up, testing, and commissioning of HVAC and mechanical equipment and systems, including air      handling units, fan coil units, rooftop units, boilers, pumps, chillers, refrigeration equipment, and associated controls
  • Work alongside commissioning personnel to verify proper equipment installation, controls, safeties, sequences, and overall system performance
  • Assist with functional testing, troubleshooting, and corrective work related to mechanical, electrical, and controls issues, installation deficiencies, equipment start-up, and warranty-related concerns
  • Use testing instruments, hand and power tools, manufacturer documentation, project specifications, and OMI procedures to support commissioning activities
  • Assist with HVAC, sheet metal, piping, controls, and mechanical equipment installation, adjustments, repairs, and corrective work as needed
  • Support Construction and Service teams with project activities, troubleshooting, and field work as assigned
  • Perform field inspections to verify mechanical equipment and installations meet project plans, specifications, manufacturer requirements, and OMI quality standards; identify and communicate deficiencies or operational concerns and assist with verifying corrective actions
  • Complete and maintain accurate commissioning and project documentation, including start-up forms, checklists, inspection records, testing results, deficiencies, corrective actions, and field reports
  • Communicate relevant field conditions, equipment concerns, and completed work to the appropriate supervisor or project team and support project closeout activities as assigned
  • Assist with staging and handling tools, equipment, and materials and maintain company equipment and work areas in a safe and organized condition
  • Follow OMI safety policies, jobsite requirements, and applicable safety regulations, including proper use of PPE; identify and report hazards, unsafe conditions, damaged equipment, and other safety concerns
  • Travel to OMI jobsites and other assigned work locations as required
  • Perform other duties as assigned based on project and operational needs

Commissioning Technician Apprentice Requirements and Qualifications

  • Familiarity with hand and power tools
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to safely operate a company vehicle
  • Must meet eligibility requirements to be insured by OMI’s commercial vehicle insurance carrier
  • Reliable, self-motivated, and able to work effectively as part of a field team
  • Ability to work occasional extended hours, early mornings, evenings, weekends, or holidays based on project requirements
  • Previous exposure to HVAC, plumbing, piping, electrical, controls, refrigeration, sheet metal, or other mechanical systems preferred
  • Previous construction, mechanical, or field-based work experience preferred
  • Basic familiarity with construction drawings, mechanical plans, equipment documentation, HVAC controls, or electrical components preferred

Physical Requirements and Work Environment

  • Ability to regularly stand, walk, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, climb, and perform physical work for extended periods
  • Ability to safely lift, carry, push, and pull 50–75 pounds
  • Ability to safely climb and work from ladders and other access equipment and work in confined or limited-access spaces
  • Ability to work in mechanical rooms, on rooftops, active construction sites, and indoor and outdoor environments with varying temperatures, weather conditions, and noise levels
  • Ability to safely work around operating mechanical equipment, electrical components, piping systems, and active      construction activities
  • Ability to wear required PPE and safely operate hand tools, power tools, testing instruments, and other equipment      necessary to perform the essential functions of the position
