We’re looking for a VP, Business Development Officer to develop new commercial lending relationships, strengthen existing business partnerships, and serve as a trusted financial resource to businesses in our communities. This is a highly relationship-focused role with the opportunity to make a meaningful impact by helping businesses grow while expanding their relationships with SCU Credit Union.
You’ll spend much of your time in the community—meeting with business owners, developing referral relationships, attending local events, and creating new opportunities. You’ll also work closely with our branches and internal teams to connect members with commercial lending, deposit, cash management, and consumer lending solutions.

What You’ll Do
Build Strong Business Relationships
- Develop and maintain relationships with area businesses, with a focus on growing commercial lending relationships.
- Proactively identify and pursue new business opportunities through calling, networking, referrals, community involvement, and in-person meetings.
- Meet regularly with current and prospective clients to understand their businesses, financial goals, and needs.
- Serve as a trusted financial partner by connecting businesses with the right combination of SCU Credit Union products and services.
- Conduct portfolio relationship calls, annual business visits, and follow-up activities to strengthen existing relationships.
- Help businesses, their owners, and employees access appropriate deposit, lending, and other financial solutions.
Develop Commercial Lending Opportunities
- Solicit and originate commercial loan opportunities from prospective and existing members.
- Analyze financial statements and business information to understand borrowing capacity, capitalization, cash flow, and overall financial structure.
- Gather required financial information and supporting documentation for loan applications.
- Help structure and negotiate commercial loans that appropriately meet the needs of the business and SCU Credit Union.
- Obtain required supporting documentation and pre-closing conditions throughout the lending process.
- Provide consultative guidance to members by assessing their needs, addressing concerns, and recommending appropriate solutions.
Create Opportunities in the Community
- Maintain a visible presence in the local business community through networking, community organizations, business groups, and events.
- Build relationships with referral sources and local business leaders to generate new opportunities.
- Represent SCU Credit Union through organizations and activities such as Chambers of Commerce, Rotary, community events, and volunteer opportunities.
- Make proactive daily prospect contacts by phone and in person to identify financial needs and initiate new relationships.
- Spend approximately 80–90% of your time outside the office building relationships and developing business.
Be a Champion for the Credit Union
- Partner closely with branch teams and other Credit Union departments to ensure a seamless member experience and a true one-team approach.
- Follow through on leads, referrals, and member requests while maintaining strong internal communication.
- Identify opportunities to connect members with consumer lending, deposit, cash management, and other Credit Union services.
- Support department and organizational goals through consistent business development and relationship management.
- Provide professional, responsive service and information in accordance with Credit Union policies.
- Maintain compliance with applicable regulations, including BSA requirements, and complete required training.
- Participate in after-hours and weekend community or business functions as needed.
What We’re Looking For
We’re looking for an experienced, highly motivated business development professional who enjoys being out in the community, building relationships, and helping businesses find financial solutions that support their success.
You’ll ideally bring:
- 2–3 years of business development experience with a demonstrated ability to identify and close new business opportunities.
- Prior banking or credit union experience preferred.
- Experience working with business owners and leaders and a strong understanding of general business principles.
- The ability to analyze financial statements and understand business financial needs.
- Strong business development, presentation, negotiation, problem-solving, and relationship-building skills.
- Excellent organization and the ability to work independently while managing multiple opportunities and priorities.
- The ability to provide consultative service and confidently recommend appropriate financial products and services.
- Knowledge of SBA 504 and 7(a) lending products is preferred.
- Intermediate technology skills, including experience with word processing, database, and spreadsheet applications.
- A valid driver’s license and appropriate insurance.
The Details
This is a highly mobile, community-focused position. The VP, Business Development Officer is expected to spend approximately 80–90% of their time outside the office meeting with clients, prospects, referral sources, and community partners. Evening and weekend commitments are required to support business and community activities.
This position does not have supervisory responsibilities.

The pay range for this position is $85,000 to $100,000 base per year + commission. It is the lowest to highest salary we in good faith believe we would pay for this role at the time of this posting. The range may be modified in the future. An employee’s pay within the salary range will be based on several factors including, but not limited to, relevant education, qualifications, certifications, experience, sales or revenue-based metrics, and business or organizational needs and affordability.
