COVENANT HEALTH AND COMMUNITY SERVICES

Interim Executive Director

Lead a foundation through a period of transition and help strengthen Northwest Florida communities.

Location: Pensacola, Florida (on-site)

Assignment: Temporary interim assignment; approximately six months, subject to organizational needs and Board determination

Compensation: $140,000-$155,000 annualized, commensurate with experience and qualifications

About the Opportunity

Covenant Health and Community Services (CHCS) is a private, non-operating grantmaking foundation that advances its charitable mission through strategic grants, community investment, partnerships, and responsible stewardship of foundation resources. CHCS is seeking an experienced executive to provide leadership and continuity during a defined period of organizational transition and foundation development.

Working closely with the Board of Directors, the Interim Executive Director will guide day-to-day operations and implement Board-approved priorities. This hands-on executive role will establish the core governance practices, grantmaking processes, financial controls, and operating systems needed to support disciplined foundation operations.

The Interim Executive Director will have the opportunity to apply for the permanent Executive Director position as part of the competitive search process. Appointment to the interim role does not guarantee selection for the permanent position.

What You'll Do

  • Serve as the foundation's senior executive and primary liaison to the Board; prepare clear reports, recommendations, meeting materials, and decision-support information.
  • Carry out Board-approved priorities and help establish effective governance practices, policies, procedures, and organizational infrastructure, while maintaining a clear distinction between Board governance and executive administration.
  • Build practical administrative processes, workflows, records, and internal controls; coordinate with legal, accounting, investment, tax, audit, technology, and other professional advisors.
  • Implement the Board-approved grantmaking approach, including processes for applications, due diligence, review, recommendations, awards, monitoring, and reporting.
  • Provide objective information on prospective grant opportunities and maintain appropriate records supporting grant decisions and foundation activities.
  • Support responsible financial stewardship by helping administer approved operating and grantmaking budgets, monitoring spending and grant commitments, supporting financial reporting and audits, and providing timely information to the Board.
  • Assess interim staffing and administrative needs; coordinate employees, consultants, and professional service providers as authorized by the Board.
  • Represent the foundation with nonprofit organizations, healthcare and civic partners, professional advisors, and other stakeholders as authorized by the Board; support Board-approved communications and protect the foundation's reputation, independence, and charitable purpose.

What We're Looking For

  • Significant senior leadership experience in nonprofit, healthcare, philanthropy, community investment, business, public administration, or a related environment.
  • Demonstrated experience working with boards, governing bodies, or senior executive leadership.
  • Experience overseeing significant budgets, financial resources, projects, grants, or organizational initiatives.
  • Experience leading through organizational transition, development, startup activity, or periods of significant change.
  • Bachelor's degree in business, public administration, nonprofit management, finance, healthcare administration, or a related field, or equivalent executive-level experience.
  • Strong judgment, discretion, communication skills, and the ability to prioritize and operate effectively with limited infrastructure in a Board-governed environment.

Preferred Experience

Experience with private foundations, grantmaking organizations, healthcare-related philanthropy, nonprofit governance, or community investment is preferred. Experience establishing policies, processes, internal controls, or organizational infrastructure and overseeing multi-million-dollar grants or community investments is valuable. Familiarity with the Northwest Florida nonprofit, healthcare, philanthropic, or civic landscape is a plus. An advanced degree in a related field is welcome.
