Centered in Covington, LA., The Council on Aging, is the lead agency providing outreach and community involvement to the senior population over age 60 in St. Tammany Parish. Boasting 8 activity centers throughout the parish, it’s activity centers, provide voluntary exercise programs, fun activities, meal provisions and our transportation services offer a compassionate hand to ensure senior citizens have access to much needed services. Additionally, our partnership with the St. Tammany Parish Government, operates STAR Transit to reach those seniors in rural areas.
The Opportunity
The Transportation Operation & Administrative Specialist plays a critical dual-role supporting both daily transit operations and departmental administrative functions for COAST’s demand-response transportation services. This position is responsible for dispatch coordination, routing, and real-time operational support while also managing data integrity, reporting, fare accountability, maintenance tracking, and administrative workflow.
This role serves as a key liaison between operations, administration, drivers, call center staff, and management to ensure safe, efficient, and compliant transportation services for elderly and disabled clients. This is a safety-sensitive position.
Transportation Operations & Dispatch
Assist with daily oversight of drivers, routes, vehicles and schedules to ensure operational efficiency and service reliability to include:
- Performing dispatch duties, monitoring drivers via GPS, respond to road calls, accidents and service interruptions, maintaining logs and required operational reports.
- Provide relief driving when necessary and assist with new hire training and departmental meetings.
Administrative, Data & Financial Support
Serve as backup support for the call center when staff is unavailable, to include:
- Taking phone calls and scheduling transportation request, entering data into multiple database, running daily validation audits, count daily fares, maintain fuel entry records, reconcile receipts and generate fuel reports as required.
- Assist with routine office administrative tasks as needed.
Emergency Management Responsibilities:
During emergency conditions, the incumbent of this position will automatically be considered an emergency service worker. This employee is subject to being called to work in the event of a disaster, such as a hurricane, or other emergency situation and is expected to perform emergency service duties, as assigned.
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
- Minimum 3 years’ experience in transportation industry preferred
- Knowledge of DOTD regulations
- Work independently at times, without direct supervision
- Demonstrated ability to multi-task while maintaining a high degree of organization
- Excellent communication skills; oral and written
- Strong computer skills with Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suites and transportation database management
- Must possess a current valid Louisiana Chauffeur’s License with a clear driving record.
