Job Summary
Obsidian Solutions Group is seeking a Technical Sales, Quoting & Customer Service Specialist to support customers throughout the entire business relationship—from initial outreach and RFQ through production, delivery, and follow-on work. This individual serves as the primary point of contact for customers and coordinates closely with engineering, production, quality, and shipping to ensure responsive communication and a smooth customer experience.
The position combines business development, technical quoting, account management, and customer service. The balance among these responsibilities will shift based on customer demand, active opportunities, and business priorities.
Responsibilities
Sales and Business Development
- Identify and pursue new customers and manufacturing opportunities.
- Conduct outbound prospecting through phone, email, professional networks, industry contacts, and other approved channels.
- Respond quickly to inbound leads and qualify opportunities based on technical fit, timing, volume, and customer requirements.
- Develop relationships with engineers, buyers, program managers, supply-chain personnel, and other customer stakeholders.
- Learn customer requirements and recommend appropriate manufacturing processes and services.
- Follow up consistently on open quotations, inactive accounts, and previously postponed or lost opportunities.
- Manage opportunities from initial contact through quotation, negotiation, purchase order, and production handoff.
- Grow existing accounts by identifying additional parts, programs, and manufacturing needs.
- Coordinate customer calls, facility tours, sample builds, capability presentations, and technical discussions.
- Maintain an accurate sales pipeline and provide updates on opportunities, expected awards, and customer activity.
- Work toward established goals for new customer development, quote conversion, customer retention, and revenue growth.
- Represent the company professionally at customer meetings, trade shows, and industry events as needed.
Quoting and Technical Coordination
- Receive and organize customer RFQs, drawings, CAD files, specifications, and supporting documentation.
- Review quantities, materials, finishes, tolerances, inspection requirements, packaging needs, and requested delivery dates.
- Identify missing, conflicting, or unclear information and obtain clarification from the customer.
- Prepare quotations using established machine rates, material costs, labor standards, lead times, and pricing guidelines.
- Estimate costs for additive manufacturing, urethane casting, finishing, painting, machining, assembly, inspection, packaging, and outside services.
- Review part geometry for basic manufacturability, build orientation, packing efficiency, support requirements, and post-processing needs.
- Coordinate with engineering, production, quality, and management when requirements fall outside established quoting standards.
- Present quotations clearly and explain pricing, lead time, process selection, assumptions, and available options.
- Review customer purchase orders against quotations and resolve discrepancies involving pricing, quantities, revisions, scope, or delivery.
- Ensure complete and accurate handoff of awarded work to production and operations personnel.
Customer Service and Account Support
- Serve as the primary day-to-day point of contact for customers and clients.
- Provide timely and professional responses to customer questions, requests, and concerns.
- Send order acknowledgments and communicate production status, expected completion dates, shipping information, and schedule changes.
- Maintain regular communication throughout the order lifecycle rather than waiting for customers to request updates.
- Coordinate customer requests with production, engineering, quality, purchasing, and shipping personnel.
- Manage customer expectations when requirements, schedules, or production conditions change.
- Document changes to quantities, revisions, delivery requirements, and other order details.
- Help resolve routine issues involving quality, delivery, documentation, or order scope.
- Coordinate technical concerns and corrective-action requests with the appropriate internal personnel.
- Maintain strong customer relationships after delivery and identify opportunities for repeat or expanded business.
- Keep accurate records of customer communications, quotations, order requirements, and commitments in company systems.
- Protect proprietary, ITAR-controlled, and Controlled Unclassified Information in accordance with company procedures.
Required Qualifications
- Experience in technical sales, business development, customer service, manufacturing quoting, account management, or a related role.
- Ability and willingness to conduct outbound prospecting and develop new customer relationships.
- Strong professional communication skills by phone, email, video conference, and in person.
- Ability to manage customer relationships while coordinating with multiple internal departments.
- Ability to understand customer needs and translate them into a clearly defined manufacturing scope.
- Ability to read basic engineering drawings, dimensions, tolerances, and manufacturing specifications.
- Strong math, computer, spreadsheet, and data-entry skills.
- Excellent organization, follow-through, responsiveness, and attention to detail.
- Ability to manage multiple customers, quotations, orders, and active opportunities simultaneously.
- Ability to recognize technical or commercial issues that require escalation.
- U.S. citizenship required due to potential access to export-controlled and defense-related technical information.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience selling additive manufacturing, machining, fabrication, contract manufacturing, engineering, or other technical services.
- Experience serving as the primary customer contact within a manufacturing environment.
- Existing relationships within the defense, aerospace, government contracting, industrial, or product-development markets.
- Experience with additive manufacturing, urethane casting, finishing, painting, machining, or assembly.
- Familiarity with STEP, STL, SolidWorks, and other common CAD file formats.
- Experience using CRM, ERP, MRP, or manufacturing quoting software.
- Familiarity with purchase orders, bills of material, inspection documentation, revision control, ITAR, and Controlled Unclassified Information.
- Experience managing a sales pipeline and working toward customer-service and revenue goals.
Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate is outgoing, persistent, technically curious, responsive, and highly organized. This person is comfortable initiating sales conversations, preparing quotations, communicating with active customers, and coordinating internally to keep orders moving.
They do not need to be an engineer, but they must be able to understand how parts are manufactured, communicate requirements accurately, maintain customer confidence, and know when to involve engineering, quality, production, or management.
