Position Summary
The Manufacturing Supervisor is responsible for overseeing daily production activities in a light-assembly manufacturing operation producing heavy-duty air brake fittings, hoses, assemblies, and related components. This position provides hands-on leadership to production employees, ensuring that products are manufactured safely, efficiently, consistently, and according to established quality standards and customer specifications. The Supervisor will coordinate personnel, equipment, materials, workflow, and production priorities while maintaining a strong focus on safety, quality, productivity, housekeeping, and on-time delivery.
Essential Responsibilities
Supervise daily activities of production and assembly personnel.
Organize and assign employees to workstations based on production requirements, skill levels, and workload.
Ensure production schedules and customer requirements are met.
Monitor production output, downtime, scrap, rework, and efficiency.
Ensure proper procedures are followed for cutting, crimping, assembly, fitting installation, testing, labeling, packaging, and other manufacturing processes.
Identify production bottlenecks and implement practical solutions to improve workflow and productivity.
Ensure adequate availability of raw materials, components, tooling, and supplies.
Coordinate with other departments regarding production priorities, material shortages, quality concerns, and schedule changes.
Maintain accurate production records and communicate shift results to management.
Quality
Ensure products are manufactured according to work instructions, drawings, specifications, and quality requirements.
Verify that hose assemblies, fittings, connections, and finished products meet applicable dimensional, visual, functional, and pressure-testing requirements.
Monitor and address defects, rework, and customer quality issues.
Work with Quality personnel to identify root causes and implement corrective actions.
Promote a culture of "quality at the source" and prevent defective products from moving to the next operation.
Ensure employees understand and follow applicable inspection and testing procedures.
Safety
Enforce all company safety policies and OSHA requirements.
Conduct regular safety observations and address unsafe conditions or behaviors immediately.
Ensure employees use required personal protective equipment (PPE).
Provide or coordinate training on safe operation of production equipment and tools.
Investigate workplace incidents and near misses and assist with corrective actions.
Maintain a clean, organized, and safe production environment.
Leadership & Employee Management
Provide day-to-day leadership, direction, coaching, and support to production employees.
Train new employees on work instructions, equipment, safety procedures, quality standards, and proper assembly techniques.
Monitor employee performance, attendance, productivity, and adherence to company policies.
Provide timely feedback and recognize strong performance.
Address performance or conduct issues appropriately and in accordance with company policies.
Promote teamwork, accountability, communication, and respect throughout the production area.
Conduct shift meetings and communicate production priorities, safety concerns, quality issues, and company updates.
Continuous Improvement
Identify opportunities to improve productivity, quality, safety, and workplace organization.
Support Lean Manufacturing, 5S, standard work, and continuous-improvement initiatives.
Help develop and maintain standardized work procedures.
Recommend improvements to tooling, fixtures, equipment, workstation layout, and production methods.
Participate in problem-solving and root-cause analysis activities.
Help reduce scrap, rework, downtime, and unnecessary material handling.
- High school diploma or GED.
- 2–5 years of experience in a manufacturing, assembly, production, or industrial environment.
- Previous supervisory, lead, or team-lead experience preferred.
- Ability to read and follow work instructions, manufacturing drawings, specifications, and procedures.
- Strong understanding of workplace safety and quality principles.
- Ability to train, coach, and hold employees accountable.
- Strong organizational and communication skills.
- Ability to work effectively in a hands-on manufacturing environment.
- Basic computer skills, including the ability to enter production information and use email and common office software.
