WORK SCHEDULE: Tuesday – Sunday. Typically, a 6-day performance schedule per production, this will change during off show periods, load in, and tech periods.
COMPENSATION: $27 per hour
POSITION SUMMARY
Berkeley Repertory Theatre (Berkeley Rep) has grown from a storefront stage to an international leader in innovative theatre. Known for its ambition, relevance, and excellence, as well as its adventurous audience, the nonprofit has provided a welcoming home for emerging and established artists since 1968. Over 6 million people have enjoyed more than 500 shows at Berkeley Rep, including 85 world premieres. Berkeley Rep shows have gone on to win 8 Tony Awards, 9 Obie Awards, 11 Drama Desk Awards, 1 Grammy Award, 1 Pulitzer Prize, and many other honors. In recognition of its place on the national stage, Berkeley Rep received the Tony Award for Outstanding Regional Theatre in 1997. Through its annual seven-play season, together with up to four special event presentations, Berkeley Rep invites audiences to enjoy an eclectic range of theatrical experiences featuring diverse artistic voices, themes, and perspectives.
Berkeley Rep (LORT B) seeks seasonal stage crew to join our team for the 2026-2027 season. Under the direction of the stage supervisor, the stage crew is responsible for running scenery and properties show tracks competently and responsibly, leading to a successful, safe, and smooth running of technical rehearsals and shows.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Duties:
- Preserving the artistic integrity of a production for the length of its run. This includes moving scenery and properties on and off-off stage, often in a fast-paced and dark environment.
- Assisting in daily preparation of stage and backstage areas as well as the maintenance and repair of a production’s scenery, props, and special effects.
- Collaborating with other departments including stage management, front of house, visiting artists and other members of production.
- Appearing onstage for scene shifts, in costume when needed.
- Participating in workshops and trainings including fly system, fall arrest, antiracism, equity, diversity, inclusion, and access.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Availability to work six days a week. Primarily, nights and weekends for our typical eight-show week. Stage Crew also works during a productions technical rehearsal process which can be 10–12-hour long shifts over the length of several weeks before the production officially opens.
- A demonstrated commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion.
- Interpersonal skills to interact with other staff members, cast members, vendors, and patrons in a professional manner.
- Ability to perform complex technical scene shifts swiftly, quietly, and efficiently.
- The physical stamina and endurance to move objects as heavy as 40 pounds from one location to another repeatedly.
- Comfortable working at heights and in cramped spaces.
- Backstage crew experience is desirable.
- Experience working in a fly house is desirable.
- Knowledge of tools and hardware is desirable.
