The Health & Wellness Manager is a hands-on program and people leader responsible for creating high-quality experiences that support the physical, social, and emotional well-being of Club members. The Manager oversees programming, staff, and youth experiences within the gym, game room, dance/movement space, kitchen-based health and nutrition programming, and other assigned Health & Wellness areas.
This position directly supervises Youth Development Professionals assigned to Health & Wellness spaces while also maintaining responsibility for an assigned group of Club members and facilitating programming as part of required youth-to-staff ratios.
Working in partnership with the Club Director and Academic Success & Workforce Readiness Manager, the Health & Wellness Manager helps the Club meet youth participation and attendance goals by developing engaging opportunities during the school day, after school, and in the evenings. Programming may include school partnerships, sports leagues, recreation, fitness, nutrition, teen programming, special events, and other activities that respond to the interests and needs of youth in the Club community.
Key Job Responsibilities:
- Plan, implement, and oversee a comprehensive Health & Wellness program that supports physical activity, healthy lifestyles, social recreation, and youth well-being.
- Facilitate engaging, developmentally appropriate programming.
- Provide leadership and oversight for programming delivered in the gym, game room, dance/movement room, kitchen, and other assigned Health & Wellness spaces.
- Ensure each assigned program space offers structured, engaging, and age-appropriate activities aligned with BGCA & BGCH program standards and intended youth outcomes.
- Develop program schedules and ensure Youth Development Professionals are prepared to facilitate planned activities.
- Regularly observe programs, provide coaching and feedback to staff, and intervene directly when additional support or coverage is needed.
- Plan and manage Club sports leagues, tournaments, clinics and other athletic activities, including scheduling, participation, staffing, equipment and game-day supervision.
- Establish and maintain appropriate standards of conduct, sportsmanship and safety for participants, staff, volunteers and coaches.
- Develop opportunities for youth to participate in fitness, recreation, dance, movement and other activities that promote lifelong healthy habits.
- Develop programming that helps youth learn about healthy eating and nutrition and makes effective use of Club kitchen spaces and community resources.
- Integrate social-emotional wellbeing and healthy decision-making into Health & Wellness programming.
- Build meaningful relationships with youth, recognize changes in behavior or wellbeing, respond appropriately to concerns, and connect youth and families to additional support when needed.
- Partner with the Social Work & Youth Wellbeing Manager, once established, and other Club leaders to support the overall wellbeing of members while maintaining appropriate role boundaries.
- Work collaboratively with the Academic Success & Workforce Readiness Manager to develop opportunities for youth to learn about careers and educational pathways connected to sports, health, wellness, recreation and related fields.
Youth Engagement, Membership Growth & Community Reach
- Partner with the Club Director and fellow Pillar Manager to develop and implement strategies that help the Club achieve youth participation, attendance and membership targets.
- Build relationships with feeder schools and identify opportunities to engage youth during the school day, including delivering programming in schools or welcoming school groups into the Club.
- Help ensure strong, engaging after-school programming that encourages youth to attend consistently.
- Develop evening programming designed to attract and retain youth and teens. While sports may be a significant component, programming should respond to the interests and needs of the Club community and may include teen nights, tournaments, special events, wellness programming, or other activities.
- Use attendance and participation data, youth feedback, and knowledge of the surrounding community to identify gaps and adjust programming.
- Support member recruitment, outreach, and retention efforts and take shared responsibility for achieving Club-level participation goals.
Leadership
- Supervise, coach, and develop Youth Development Professionals assigned to Health & Wellness spaces.
- Provide regular feedback, coaching, and support to strengthen staff performance and program facilitation.
- Conduct staff check-ins, conduct performance evaluations, and address performance or accountability concerns.
- Ensure staff understand schedules, program expectations, youth development practices, safety requirements, and applicable grant expectations.
- Model strong youth development practices, positive communication, professionalism, and accountability.
- Create a collaborative work environment that encourages staff ownership, problem-solving, and continuous improvement.
- Help staff understand how their individual programs contribute to the overall Club experience and organizational goals.
- In the absence of the Club Director, may serve as Manager on Duty and provide supervision and direction for the facility and staff.
Strategic Planning
- Contribute to Club-level planning by providing perspective on youth interests, Health & Wellness programming, participation trends and staff development needs.
- Identify opportunities to strengthen program quality, expand youth participation and improve the use of Club spaces.
- Recommend new programs, partnerships or approaches that will better meet youth and community needs.
- Stay informed about relevant youth development, health, recreation, and wellness trends and identify practical opportunities to incorporate them into Club programming.
Resource Management
- Manage and maintain Health & Wellness equipment, materials, and program resources.
- Ensure assigned spaces are safe, organized, welcoming, and ready for daily programming.
- Monitor expenditures and support responsible management of the Health & Wellness budget.
- Research and recommend equipment, supplies, and resources that strengthen program quality.
- Support implementation of grant-funded programming and ensure required attendance, documentation, and program data are completed accurately and on time.
- Ensure programming is operated in accordance with BGCH policies, procedures, safety expectations, and applicable regulatory requirements.
- Recruit and utilize volunteers and community resources as appropriate.
- Transport youth in BGCH vehicles as required.
Partnership Development
- Develop collaborative relationships with schools, families, community organizations, colleges, athletic organizations, health and wellness professionals, and other resources that can strengthen the Health & Wellness program.
- Identify opportunities for field trips, volunteers, guest speakers, clinics, demonstrations, and experiential learning.
- Serve as a connector between the Club and community resources that can expand youth access to health, recreation, and wellness opportunities.
- Represent BGCH professionally at community events, school meetings, and partner activities as assigned.
Relationships
Internal: Maintain close contact with the Club Director, Academic Success & Workforce Readiness Manager, Youth Development Professionals, Social Work & Youth Wellbeing Manager, other BGCH staff, and Club members to coordinate programming, solve problems, and support a strong Club experience.
External: Maintain relationships with schools, families, vendors, volunteers, coaches, health and wellness professionals, community organizations, and other partners to achieve program and participation goals.
Supervisory Responsibility:
This position supervises all part-time Health & Wellness Assistants at their assigned Club. In the absence of the Club Director and Academic Success & Workforce Readiness Managers, the Health & Wellness Manager may be asked to supervise the facility and all staff until the Club Director or Academic Success & Workforce Readiness Managers return to work.
Expected Hours of Work
- September – early June: Monday through Friday 11:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. (schedule will be adjusted to accommodate required weekend hours during sports season)
- Late June – August: Monday through Friday, eight hours between 8:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. as designated by supervisor
- Occasional morning and/or evening and weekend work will be required as job duties demand
- Work may require local and occasional distant overnight travel.

- Bachelor’s Degree in a related field or equivalent work experience is mandatory
- At least two years of experience working with youth, including experience leading groups and facilitating programs.
- Demonstrated ability to manage, coach, and lead staff.
- Experience planning, implementing, and evaluating sports, recreation, fitness, health, or youth development programming.
- Strong group leadership and behavior-management skills.
- Ability to build positive relationships with youth and respond appropriately to behavioral, social, or emotional concerns.
- Demonstrated initiative and ability to identify needs, develop solutions, and translate ideas into action.
- Strong organization and time-management skills with the ability to manage multiple program areas simultaneously.
- Ability to use participation and program data to inform decisions and improve programming.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Basic computer proficiency, including Microsoft Office and related systems.
- Experience managing budgets or program resources preferred.
- Bilingual English/Spanish is a plus.
- PSL endorsement on a valid Connecticut driver’s license required or must be obtained within six months of employment.
